Favourite vs. Least Favourite K-Pop Songs

Red Velvet

When I was a teenager I loved pretty much any song my favourite artists released but K-Pop is funny as the same group can have many completely different sounding comebacks. When I first got into K-Pop this really surprised me – I remember being a big fan of 2NE1’s ‘I Am the Best’ so I decided to listen to more of their stuff and clicked onto ‘Come Back Home’ which had a completely different vibe.

Anyway, even if I love and stan a group they can sometimes release songs that I’m not a massive fan of so I decided to write a list of my favourite vs least favourite songs by my favourite K-Pop artists!

Girls’ Generation

Favourite Song: I Got a Boy

I Got A Boy gif.gif

Least Favourite Song: Genie

Genie gif.gif

It’s been no secret on this blog that my favourite Girls’ Generation song is ‘I Got a Boy’. It was the first song I listened to by them and I loved everything about it. Even now I don’t think anything will top it. Now I don’t hate Genie but I really don’t like the leg movement (as shown in the gif) and compared to their other songs I just find it a little annoying. Fun fact, I got proper backlash when I responded to a tweet that said ‘Girls’ Generation’s worst title song is Party’ – others were replying with their least favourites so I responded ‘Incorrect, it’s Genie’ and suddenly I was getting messages from angry SONEs who clearly thought I hated the whole group! I deleted the tweet because it was clearly taken the wrong way but gosh, people need to learn to chill.

Crayon Pop

Favourite Song: Uh-Ee

Crayon Pop Uh-Ee gif.gif

Least Favourite Song: HaPaTaKa

Crayon Pop gif 2.gif

My favourite song by Crayon Pop changes quite regularly because I love pretty much all of them. However, I really didn’t like ‘HaPaTaKa’ from the FM album. It only had three songs, I obviously loved ‘FM’ and I thought ‘1,2,3,4’ was sweet but ‘HaPaTaKa’ is just boring and pointless. At least it’s not a title track I suppose but yeah, not particularly a fan of that one!

BTS

Favourite Song: Idol

BTS Idol gif 2.gif

Least Favourite Song: Just One Day

BTS Just One Day gif.gif

To be honest my favourite BTS song changes all the time and I don’t doubt that I’ll post it and immediately have a new favourite song but at the moment I do love ‘Idol’. I don’t think I loved it at first listen but after a couple more times it quickly grew on me and seeing it live at Wembley was SO much fun. It’s such an energetic song! There aren’t many songs I dislike but unfortunately I find ‘Just One Day’ a little bit boring. I haven’t listened to it a ton so who knows, it may grow on me one day? I’m not sure I’ll ever be a massive fan of ‘Ma City’ because it’s my friends alarm tone so the start of the song just reminds me of extremely tiring, bad mood mornings from sleepovers haha!

AOA

Favourite Song: Bingle Bangle

AOA Bingle Bangle gif 2.gif

Least Favourite Song: Heart Attack

AOA Heart Attack gif.gif

I won’t go on and on about this one because I’ve already mentioned how much I dislike the song ‘Heart Attack’ on this blog before but yeah, I’ve tried several times to like this song and I just can’t. I love pretty much all other AOA songs, especially ‘Bingle Bangle’ – Jimin’s rap absolutely makes the song, you can’t tell me otherwise. But I can’t get into ‘Heart Attack’ no matter how much I want to.

Red Velvet

Favourite Song: Really Bad Boy

Really Bad Boy gif 2.gif

Least Favourite Song: One of These Nights

One of These Nights gif.gif

Everybody proper hyped up ‘Bad Boy’ and although I liked it I can’t say it’s ever been one of my favourite Red Velvet songs because I prefer something a bit more energetic. Like don’t get me wrong, it was good and I liked the vibe but it’s not really my usual type of song. ‘Really Bad Boy’ hooked me right from the start and is definitely more my type of song. As already mentioned I’m not the biggest fan of slow songs so I didn’t really enjoy ‘One of These Nights’. Sure, Red Velvet’s vocals are good but it’s still not their most interesting song.

Mamamoo

Favourite Song: Egotistic

Egotistic gif 2

Least Favourite Song: Starry Night

Starry Night gif.gif

After ‘Starry Night’ was released I started to go off Mamamoo a little bit because I didn’t like ‘Egotistic’ either. Until Jess gave me a lift home one night and blasted that song the entire way back. I started listening to it on Spotify and started to appreciate it a lot more until it eventually became my favourite song. I can’t get into ‘Starry Night’, it’s another song that just feels too boring for me. I’m not sure how much I love Mamamoo anymore but I’ll keep an eye on their future releases.

Block B

Favourite Song: Very Good

Very Good gif.gif

Least Favourite Song: Toy

Toy gif.gif

Now I don’t dislike ‘Toy’ but like most songs I’m not a huge fan of it’s just a bit slow and doesn’t really capture my interest. Also was the dab in the choreography necessary? I prefer their other upbeat songs, ‘Very Good’ being one of my favourites. I do love ‘Jackpot’ as well though. Block B have some absolute bangers, I’m just not a massive fan of ‘Toy’.

TWICE

Favourite Song: Yes or Yes?

Yes or Yes gif 2.gif

Least Favourite Song: Signal

Signal gif.gif

You either love or hate TWICE and I absolutely love them. I’ve loved pretty much all of their comebacks except some have taken a little longer to grow on me. For example everybody was hyping up ‘TT’ but I didn’t see the appeal. Even now that I like the song it’s still not my favourite TWICE song. But my least favourite was quickly replaced with ‘Signal’ – it’s not a bad song and I don’t hate it but God it’s definitely not their best. My favourite TWICE song changes pretty much every comeback and I loved ‘Yes or Yes’ straightaway so that’s currently my favourite.

EXO

Favourite Song: Monster

Exo Monster gif.gif

Least Favourite Song: Wolf

EXO Wolf gif.gif

Not many people love Wolf, let’s be fair – I’m not the biggest EXO fan on the planet so I don’t know a ton of their songs but I do like quite a few of them, my favourite being Monster. I’ve only listened to one EXO-CBX song and that was because me and my friends were showing each other the cringiest K-Pop songs we could find and they put on ‘Ka-CHING’ which although cringey I actually really love.

Oh My Girl

Favourite Song: Closer

Closer gif.gif

Least Favourite Song: Secret Garden

Secret Garden gif.gif

I wasn’t really a big fan of Oh My Girl’s releases last year. I liked ‘Banana Allergy Monkey’ but that was a subunit debut so it doesn’t really count. Oh My Girl are one of my favourite groups so I did want to like their comebacks last year but I just… Didn’t? I didn’t really like ‘Remember Me’ either. I love their older stuff like ‘Liar Liar’ and ‘Windy Day’, and especially love ‘Closer’ but I don’t know. Their stuff this year just wasn’t doing it for me.

Black Pink

Favourite Song: Kill This Love

Kill This Love gif.gif

Least Favourite Song: Playing With Fire

Playing With Fire gif

Most new Black Pink songs take a while to grow on me before I decide that yeah, they’re good songs. ‘Kill This Love’ was different because from that first listen I was in love. It was just so… I don’t even know but I couldn’t stop listening to it! I loved absolutely everything about it – even my sister who’s not really a fan of K-Pop was getting hyped about this song. Now I don’t dislike ‘Playing With Fire’ but I think out of all their songs it just doesn’t interest me as much. Weirdly I quite liked ‘Stay’ considering my hatred for slow songs but couldn’t get into ‘Playing With Fire’ as much.

So yeah, those are my favourite vs least favourite K-Pop songs! Feel free to leave a comment with yours and we can compare!

Top 10 Favourite Crayon Pop Songs

Crayon Pop.jpg

Crayon Pop were the group that officially got me into K-Pop and I still love them today. However they’re officially ‘on hiatus’ as Soyul left the group, got married and had a child whilst the other members are currently working on solo activities. I’m still hoping for a comeback one day even if Soyul’s not there but I guess we’ll have to see. Anyway, I thought I’d write a list of my ten favourite Crayon Pop songs!

10. 1, 2, 3, 4

Crayon Pop 1 2 3 4 gif.gif

Usually with K-Pop I just tend to like the title tracks and not really any of the other songs on the album – I don’t know why, I just can’t get as interested. I bought Crayon Pop’s ‘FM’ mini album and listened to all three of the songs. While I didn’t really like ‘HaPaTaKa’ I did really like ‘1, 2, 3, 4’. It’s just a sweet song that never gets boring to me so it’s definitely on my list of favourites.

9. We Are Pirates

Crayon Pop We Are Pirates gif.gif

I’m incredibly salty that they didn’t film a music video for this because it’s such a good song and I’d have loved to have seen an MV of the girls dressed up as pirates. But unfortunately we didn’t get one, maybe there wasn’t the budget for it but either way I really loved the song. Pretty sure this song was a Japanese release like ‘RaRiRuRe’ which was another good song but ‘We Are Pirates’ was just a lot better.

8. Bing Bing

Crayon Pop Bing Bing gif.gif

Although ‘Saturday Night’ is Crayon Pop’s official debut song, ‘Bing Bing’ was actually released first when they debuted as ‘Hurricane Pop’ (before Way joined the group). There are a few different versions of this song, I love it when they have the dance break in the middle with the sun glasses – that’s personally my favourite version although I do love the version where Soyul raps as well. It’s a really fun and upbeat song which I will probably always love!

7. Dancing Queen

Crayon Pop Dancing Queen gif.gif

I love watching the dance practice video for this song because the girls are just so full of energy and honestly I wish I had some of that. I’m not sure about the music video for this one, it’s a bit random but the song is still amazing. I wish I could’ve seen them perform it live.

6. Bar Bar Bar

Crayon Pop Bar Bar Bar gif 2.gif

I don’t care what anybody says this song is iconic and amazing. Yes it’s a bit repetitive but it’s a lot of fun with a cool dance. I know the whole routine but can’t make it to the end without wanting to collapse so honestly for anyone that claims this dance is ‘easy’, do you wanna try doing it whilst looking as flawless as Crayon Pop? The song brought them a bit of fame but unfortunately not a lot which is sad but at least they had a hit song which turned into something pretty iconic.

5. Uh-ee

Crayon Pop Uh-Ee gif.gif

This is another song where the choreography looks relatively easy but the moment you try to do it you find it’s actually more difficult than it looks. Crayon Pop are so full of energy and I wish they got more recognition for that. ‘Uh-ee’ is one of the first songs I liked by them and I used to watch the same fancam of the song on repeat which is how I picked up the choreography. The song may seem a little childish but it’s a lot of fun and I love it.

4. Doo Doom Chit

Crayon Pop Doo Doom Chit gif.gif

The last comeback they had as a full group before Soyul left and they all went on indefinite hiatus. I loved everything about this comeback – the MV was great, the choreography is a lot of fun and the song itself is just great. I don’t care what anybody says, I loved this comeback and wish they could’ve released more after it.

3. OK (Strawberry Milk)

Strawberry Milk OK gif.gif

‘OK’ was the debut song of Crayon Pop’s sub-unit ‘Strawberry Milk’, made up of the twins Choa and Way. This was one of those songs that I immediately loved upon hearing and had it on repeat for the next couple of weeks. The MV was really cute and I love the choreography for this one as well. This is one of the best sub-unit songs I’ve heard and in Korea it was pretty popular, a lot of idols sang and danced to the song. This song is another one that’s iconic, let’s be real.

2. FM

Crayon Pop FM gif 2.gif

My first comeback as a fan! I remember they dropped the MV whilst I was at college in Film Studies so I stuck my headphones in and watched the MV in the middle of class, praying my teacher wouldn’t look over and ask what I was doing. I loved it. The song was awesome and I loved the whole super hero concept. I also loved Gummi’s hair and went into the hairdressers to see if they could do something similar (they could’ve done but it would’ve cost a fortune and I’d have been in there all day apparently so uh I gave that a miss). This comeback was one of their best and I loved it so much.

1. Saturday Night

Crayon Pop Saturday Night gif.gif

I don’t know what it is but at the moment I’m in love with Crayon Pop’s debut song, ‘Saturday Night’. Their outfits were funky, they were upbeat and I love Way’s rap. This song wasn’t commercially successful so Crayon Pop had to take to the streets to promote their music as no music shows would let them promote, which is why I won’t stand for anyone saying Crayon Pop got famous by ‘luck’. Yes, it was lucky that ‘Bar Bar Bar’ was a success but they worked hard to get to that point!

So there we have it, my favourite Crayon Pop songs. Let me know yours and if you haven’t heard any of these then be sure to give them a listen!

Ten Slow K-Pop Songs I Like

Oh My Girl

I don’t particularly like slow songs. I think they’re okay sometimes when I’m feeling something chill or I’m sad and wanna stick on depressing songs. But even then I can’t get into many slow songs. So today I thought I’d write a list of ten slow K-Pop songs that I actually like!

10. IOI – Downpour

IOI Downpour gif 2.gif

I loved IOI but I really couldn’t get into Wanna One. Not that I tried, in all fairness, but I was still mourning IOI and the fact Wanna One were getting better opportunities and promotions (not even gonna go into it at this point). I love this song even though I cried buckets when I first listened to it. This is a slow song that I don’t hate and could happily keep listening to.

9. BTS – Butterfly

BTS Butterfly gif

This song makes me sad too, it’s like my go to song whenever I’m feeling upset even though it doesn’t make me feel better. I just love everything about it and I’d love to see them perform it live someday. It makes me sad that even if I did get to go to their concert one day I doubt this would be on the set list. Probably just as well because I’d start crying at the concert and nobody needs that. Either way I love this song.

8. Crayon Pop – 1, 2, 3, 4

Crayon Pop gif.gif

Not sure if this counts because compared to other songs on this list it’s not really ‘slow’ but compared to other Crayon Pop songs it is. This is a song I loved pretty much straightaway. Crayon Pop released their ‘FM’ album and there were only 3 songs on the album – FM, 1 2 3 4 and HaPaTaKa. I was not a fan of HaPaTaKa but I loved 1, 2, 3, 4 almost instantly and I still do. Such a good song and really shows Crayon Pop’s talent!

7. 2NE1 – Goodbye

2NE1 Goodbye gif.gif

Another disbandment song that made me cry! Why do girl groups have to do this? I loved 2NE1 and they didn’t have a comeback when I became a fan. I was a fan for like two years and they didn’t have a single comeback until they released ‘Goodbye’. That’s not good enough if you ask me. I loved this song straightaway even though it is slow because it’s so sad and I just loved everything about it. Well, I wish they hadn’t done Dara dirty with the amount of lines she got but other than that it’s amazing.

6. Strawberry Milk – Hello

Strawberry Milk gif.gif

Strawberry Milk are Crayon Pop’s sub-unit, made up of the twins Choa and Way. When I first heard this song I didn’t actually like it that much. I was so hyped after listening to ‘OK’ and ‘Feel So Good’ that I felt a bit deflated after listening to ‘Hello’. I love it a lot more now though. I love Choa and Way’s voices so much and this song is beautiful.

5. Jessica Jung – Gravity

Jessica Jung gif.gif

I’m pretty sure this is a cover so I’m not entirely sure it counts but I still love everything about it. Jessica’s voice is so beautiful and this song really showcases that. I wish I was as talented as Jessica because honestly the girl can sing.

4. Ladies’ Code – I’ll Smile Even If It Hurts

Ladies Code gif.gif

I can’t listen to this song without crying and I doubt there are many who can to be honest. It was written about the deaths of Ladies’ Code’s members EunB and RiSe. I don’t really want to talk about it too much because I feel a bit bad for including this on such a list but it’s a truly beautiful, heart-breaking song and you can really feel the member’s emotion.

3. Girls’ Generation – Sailing

Girls Generation Sailing gif.gif

I HATED this song when I first heard it. I had been so looking forward to a Girls’ Generation comeback and I was really disappointed with the song and the boring music video. But over time, the more I listened to it, the more I learned to love it. Apparently Sooyoung wrote the lyrics and it’s a beautiful song. It was to celebrate their 9th anniversary and I honestly love it.

2. AOA – With Elvis

AOA gif 2.gif

I really love AOA recently so I’ve been listening to more of their songs because I think they’re actually amazing. I came across this one when I read it was a song they’d written for their fans so I decided to give it a listen. And I loved it! I think it’s amazing. My favourite part has to be Jimin’s but the whole song is just generally really good.

1. Taeyeon – Rescue Me

Taeyeon gif.gif

I’m not sure if this counts as ‘slow’ or if it even counts as K-Pop because I’m pretty sure it’s actually Japanese but I love it. It’s one of my favourite songs in general at the moment and I just don’t think there’s anything about it that I dislike. Taeyeon is an amazing singer but I am getting a little sick of all her comebacks recently like it feels like every month we get a new Taeyeon song. I liked her earlier stuff like ‘I’, ‘Why’ and ‘Rain’ but I’m starting to get a little bored. Regardless, I absolutely love ‘Rescue Me’ and really recommend giving it a listen.

BONUS: Bear Planet – The Road

Choa and Way gif.gif

I listened to this because it featured Choa and Way from Crayon Pop in both the song and the MV so I decided to listen to it. The MV is actually one of my favourites and I love it. This song is really good and is another that can make me cry if I’m feeling sad enough. I recommend watching the MV for this one!

So there we go, ten (technically eleven) slow songs that I really love! Feel free to leave me some recommendations for slow K-Pop songs that you enjoyed!

First Song I Listened to By My Favourite K-Pop Groups

Girls Generation.jpg

I always think it’s interesting to hear how people became a K-Pop fan or a fan of a certain group so I thought I’d write a list of the first song I ever heard by groups I love now then compare it to my current favourite song by that group! Enjoy.

Crayon Pop

First Song: Bar Bar Bar

Crayon Pop Bar Bar Bar gif.gif

Favourite Song: FM

Crayon Pop FM gif.gif

I went with Crayon Pop first because they were the first K-Pop group I listened to knowing that they were K-Pop (I did watch an Orange Caramel music video first technically but at the time I thought they were J-Pop). I was a big fan of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu who’s a J-Pop singer and when I was scrolling through Tumblr I found a photo with the caption ‘Lady Gaga with K-Pop group Crayon Pop’. Because I was a fan of J-Pop I decided I wanted to give K-Pop a try so I figured I might as well start with this group, Crayon Pop.

Now I love Crayon Pop to pieces now but I can’t deny that I did not like ‘Bar Bar Bar’ when I first heard it. Everything was a bit weird, their outfits, the music video, the song itself… But I hadn’t liked ‘Pon Pon Pon’ by Kyary when I’d first heard it so I decided to keep giving Crayon Pop a try until eventually the song grew on me. From then on I was absolute K-Pop trash.

Crayon Pop have a lot of great songs but unfortunately they’re mostly known for dancing with the helmets with ‘Bar Bar Bar’. ‘FM’ was the first comeback they had where I was officially a fan and I remember watching the music video when it dropped during a college lesson and praying my teacher wouldn’t notice. My favourite song was ‘Doo Doom Chit’ for a while but I think I prefer ‘FM’ that little bit more.

I’m so sad that Crayon Pop aren’t technically together anymore but it doesn’t stop me from hoping they’ll release something together soon, even if Soyul’s not there!

AOA

First Song: Heart Attack

AOA Heart Attack gif

Favourite Song: Mini Skirt

AOA Mini Skirt gif.gif

I’ve definitely mentioned this before but I couldn’t stand ‘Heart Attack’ when I first heard it. I wanted to listen to more K-Pop groups and at the time I only really listened to girl groups so I stuck on a ‘K-Pop Girl Group 2015’ playlist and started listening. I started to love most of the songs but I had to skip AOA’s ‘Heart Attack’ every time I heard it. Because I hated that song I assumed I wouldn’t like any AOA songs so I never really gave them a chance.

When they dropped their ‘Good Luck’ comeback everyone was raving about it so I checked it out… And actually really loved it. So I started listening to more of their stuff and now I’m a massive AOA fan. I wish Choa hadn’t left but hopefully AOA can continue promoting with the remaining members. My favourite song at the moment is ‘Mini Skirt’ but I did love their ‘Excuse Me’ comeback.

EXO

First Song: Overdose

EXO Overdose gif.gif

Favourite Song: Lotto

EXO Lotto gif.gif

EXO were the first boy group I ever listened to because everyone on Tumblr was talking about them. I hadn’t tried to get into any boy groups yet so I gave ‘Overdose’ a listen. Although I thought it was good I didn’t particularly love it or EXO all that much. That was when I figured out I was more of a girl group stan. I think I wouldn’t have bothered much more with EXO but when my friends became fans of K-Pop they started to like EXO so I checked them out some more. They have a few good songs but I don’t particularly know how I feel about them.

Red Velvet

First Song: Ice Cream Cake

Red Velvet Ice Cream Cake gif.gif

Favourite Song: Peek-A-Boo

Red Velvet Peek-A-Boo gif

I’d kind of heard of Red Velvet but never really gone out of my way to listen to them before until I saw a K-Pop cover dance group at London Comic Con a couple of years ago. They danced to ‘Ice Cream Cake’ and I got it stuck in my head so when I came home I started listening to it and quickly fell in love with the song.

I officially became a fan and started caring about them when they released ‘Dumb Dumb’ I loved that song from the moment I first heard it, it’s so catchy. For a while I thought they’d gone a bit downhill because I wasn’t a fan of ‘Russian Roulette’ at first but that song grew on me, so did ‘Rookie’ and ‘Red Flavour’. ‘Peek-A-Boo’ was another song that I loved immediately. I’d love to see Red Velvet live someday, I love them so much.

Mamamoo

First Song: Um Oh Ah Yeh

Mamamoo Um Oh Ah Yeh gif.gif

Favourite Song: Aze Gag (Dad Jokes)

Mamamoo Aze Gag gif

Everyone and their dog was going on about Mamamoo at the time so I decided to give them a listen. Everyone had been bragging about their amazing vocals and I don’t think ‘Um Oh Ah Yeh’ is the best song to showcase that. I didn’t like it. I tried listening to ‘You’re The Best’ but I didn’t like that either. However I did really want to become a fan of their music because I knew all the girls names and I loved their personalities. So I gave them another chance.

I got into ‘You’re The Best’ first and it went from there. Mamamoo are one of those groups where their songs need a couple of listens before I can get into them. They’re one of my favourite groups now and I love them all, I can’t wait for their next comeback.

BTS

First Song: War of Hormone

BTS War of Hormone gif.gif

Favourite Song: Mic Drop

BTS Mic Drop gif.gif

When I first listened to BTS they were pretty popular but it was nothing compared to their popularity now. I wasn’t really fussed about listening to boy groups at the time because I was more interested in girl groups but I’d seen a couple of funny BTS vines posted by my friend Becca and I thought they were pretty funny so when Becca officially recommended them to me I gave them a listen. I didn’t really know what to think.

I can’t really remember my first impression of ‘War of Hormone’, I’m pretty sure I liked it but I didn’t love it or anything. Then I listened to ‘Dope’ and I remember being like “Oh my god this is intense” even though it wasn’t – I’ve mentioned that for a few songs, I was like shocked so easily back then. I think I would’ve remained a casual fan but Jess asked me for some K-Pop recommendations. I sent her like 5 girl groups and 2 boy groups, one being EXO and the other being BTS. She fell so hard for BTS that she made us go to Paris to see them at K-Con. And that is where I also fell in love with them. And now I’m absolute trash.

2NE1

First Song: I Am the Best

2NE1 I Am The Best gif.gif

Favourite Song: Ugly

2NE1 Ugly gif.gif

I whacked on 2NE1 one day because I was looking for new girl groups to listen to and immediately recognised the song ‘I Am The Best’ because it had been in an advert. I can’t remember which advert but I remember I always saw it at Cineworld. I immediately loved the song because it was already kind of familiar to me. However when I tried to listen to more 2NE1 I wasn’t particularly a fan.

The next song I put on was ‘Come Back Home’ which sounded nothing like ‘I Am the Best’. I was kind of used to bands I listened to having similar sounding songs so at the time K-Pop kind of blew my mind because groups change concepts and sounds all the time. It took me a while but I kept listened to a ‘2NE1 Best Hits’ playlist and eventually I started to love several of their songs. I’m so sad they broke up, why did it have to end like this?

Girls’ Generation

First Song: I Got a Boy

Girls Generation I Got A Boy gif 2.gif

Favourite Song: I Got a Boy

Girls Generation I Got A Boy gif.gif

I love tons of Girls’ Generation songs now but I think my favourite will forever be ‘I Got a Boy’. I hated it when I first listened to it but after giving them several go’s I did eventually learn to love them. They were another group where I couldn’t believe how different their songs were to each other but once I got used to it I found I could listen to pretty much anything by them and love it.

I’m sad because although SM haven’t officially announced Girls’ Generation’s split it’s pretty obvious they’re not together anymore and I’m sad they didn’t have more comebacks in the time I was a fan. I became an official fan just before ‘Catch Me If You Can’ was released so I never had a comeback with Jessica. But I’ll continue to support whatever they choose to do in the future.

24K

First Song: Bingo

24K Bingo gif.gif

Favourite Song: Hey You

24K Hey You gif.gif

I became a fan of 24K because they announced a European tour, they were coming to England and Jess gave them a listen and decided she wanted to go. So me and Becca decided to come too and before we knew it we were absolute 24K trash. We travelled to Amsterdam so just me and Becca could see them and then I ended up seeing them alone again in London because Becca and Jess were in Berlin.

I’m gonna be truthful and admit that the only song I really knew properly when I went to see them in London was Bingo. I had a great time because 24K are amazing and so fun to see live but yep, I only really knew Bingo… However after the concert me and Becca both ordered their album which I’m still low-key salty about because I ordered mine just 20 minutes after her and she got her album within three days and I had to wait over a month. And she got my biases photo card. Goddammit.

Anyway, I started listening to a lot more of 24K’s stuff because they’re really good and for a while my favourite song kept changing but now it’s definitely ‘Hey You’, that song is so good. I can’t wait to see what 24K release this year because I know it’ll be good!

Feel free to comment the first song you heard by your favourite K-Pop group, I’m interested to hear!

Top Ten Favourite K-Pop Debut Songs

Black Pink Debut picture

I feel like debuts can range from really good to dreadful to cringe to kind of okay. If you become a fan of a group a few years after they’ve debuted then a lot of the time their debut song doesn’t match their sound anymore. And that’s okay, groups grow musically and that can be a good thing! There are some debut songs I can’t stand to listen to but there are also tons I absolutely love so I thought I’d make a list of my ten favourites.

10. 4Minute – Hot Issue

4Minute Hot Issue gif.gif

I first listened to 4Minute because they were recommended to me by a friend. The first song I listened to was ‘Crazy’ which I loved at first listen but I found that at first I wasn’t a big fan of their older songs. 4Minute debuted in 2009 so some of their older work did sound quite old fashioned but soon the songs began to grow on me. I didn’t like ‘Hot Issue’ at first listen but now I love it, it was such a great debut. I miss 4Minute so much but I’m glad Hyuna’s still promoting.

9. Black Pink – Boombayah

Black Pink Boombayah gif.gif

I can never decide what I think of Black Pink. One minute I love them and the next I don’t particularly like them. But I loved ‘Boombayah’ and I still do! I feel like at the time more people were raving about ‘Whistle’ but I wasn’t particularly a fan whereas I couldn’t stop listening to ‘Boombayah’. I’m still not sure where I stand with Black Pink but I would like it if they had better promotions like they had what, one comeback this year? Get it together YG.

8. Seventeen – Adore U

Seventeen Adore U gif.gif

This was the first song I’d ever listened to by Seventeen and I wasn’t even aware they were a new group at the time. I first heard of them in 2015 and I honestly had no idea that was the year they’d debuted at the time, I assumed they’d been around a while. At the time I didn’t particularly listen to boy groups and if I ever tried to I grew bored almost immediately. But I instantly liked Seventeen, I loved ‘Adore U’ and ‘Shining Diamond’. I kept recommending them to my friend and she kept putting it off but when she eventually did start listening to them she ended up loving them. This was a great debut song, I love it so much! Also the acoustic version is the best thing I’ve ever heard, just saying.

7. GP Basic – Game

GP Basic Game gif.gif

I only discovered GP Basic this year so I’m really disappointed to find out they disbanded because they have some good songs. My favourite though is probably their debut song ‘Game’, I don’t even particularly know what it is I like about it but I love it. I wish they were still together because they were so good and all the members were so talented, especially the maknae Janey.

6. Mamamoo – Mr Ambiguous

Mamamoo Mr Ambiguous gif.gif

It’s no secret that I love Mamamoo but I didn’t like them when I first listened to them. I think I first listened to ‘Um Oh Ah Yeh’ which at the time I thought was really boring, then I couldn’t get into ‘You’re The Best’. But I kept trying because I thought Mamamoo were really funny and in the end they grew on me. Their debut was named one of the best debuts ever at the time and I have to agree. I love everything about it, especially the choreography.

5. After School – Ah

After School Ah gif.gif

I keep trying to get into After School but I’m just not feeling their songs except for ‘Ah’. It’s the only song I really like and I honestly don’t know why I can’t get into their other songs. However I think ‘Ah’ was a great debut and I wish I could love After School more even though Pledis don’t seem keen to give them a comeback anytime soon… To be honest I’m not really a fan of the whole ‘admissions and graduation’ concept in groups like how disappointed would you be to train for years to join a group where you’re forced to ‘graduate’ even if you still want to promote? Either way I’ll try harder to get into After School because they are extremely talented!

4. Crayon Pop – Saturday Night

Crayon Pop Saturday Night gif.gif

Listen to me, CRAYON POP DID NOT WORK EXTREMELY HARD FOR EVERYONE TO SAY THEY GOT POPULAR BY LUCK. They had some success with ‘Bar Bar Bar’ but then everyone drifted away. They worked so hard though, after ‘Saturday Night’ wasn’t a commercial success they weren’t allowed to perform on many music shows when they made their comeback. So they took to the streets to promote their work and worked so hard to get where they got. I love all of their songs, especially their debut ‘Saturday Night’ which was really good! I especially love Way’s rap and the dance practice for this is so good. I miss my girls but I’m proud of how far they got.

3. 2NE1 – Fire

2NE1 Fire gif.gif

Another girl group I miss are 2NE1 like why did they have to disband like that? They were so iconic and I’m sad that I wasn’t a fan for any of their comebacks other than ‘Goodbye’. I didn’t become a fan until 2015 so for the first song they release when I officially become a fan be a disbandment song was pretty disappointing. But their old songs are amazing, I especially love their debut with ‘Fire’ which is a brilliant song. If you haven’t listened to it then you’re missing out.

2. BTS – No More Dream

BTS No More Dream gif.gif

This is an example of a group changing their sound because BTS don’t really look or sound anything like this anymore, do they? I hadn’t heard their debut song until my friend convinced me we should try and learn the dance. Through learning the dance I started to love the song and I actually think it’s brilliant. I think I prefer BTS’ more recent work like ‘Fire’, ‘MIC Drop’ and ‘I Need U’ etc. but there’s still something about their earlier songs like ‘We Are Bulletproof’ and ‘No More Dream’ that I love. I imagine most people have heard this ‘cos BTS are so popular now so I won’t even bother trying to convince you to listen to it.

1. Girls’ Generation – Into the New World

Girls Generation Into The New World gif 2.gif

Girls’ Generation are my favourite group so it makes sense that I’m a little biased but I think even if they weren’t this still would’ve had my top spot. This debut is so beautiful and uplifting and I love everything about it. The girls really got to showcase how talented they were and it’s crazy to see how far they’ve come since that low quality music video to celebrating their ten year anniversary this year. I’m so proud of them and I love this debut more than anything.

There you go, there’s my ten favourite K-Pop debuts. Feel free to let me know your favourites in the comments!

Top Ten Underrated K-Pop Songs

Dal Shabet.jpg

Unfortunately not every artist is super successful and that applies to K-Pop too. There are so many good groups and idols who although are extremely talented just haven’t had the luck or the chance to make it big. However a lot of the time they still have an extremely loyal fan base and some really decent songs if people would give them the chance! So I thought I’d write a list of my top ten favourite underrated songs.

10. Momoland – Freeze!

Momoland Freeze gif.gif

This is another song that I wasn’t particularly fond of at first listen but after a few tries it eventually grew on me. Momoland are a nine member girl group and ‘Freeze!’ is their most recent comeback. I haven’t listened to any of their other songs but I will definitely check out more of them. ‘Freeze!’ is a really fun song and I recommend giving it a listen.

9. Marmello – Puppet

Marmello Puppet gif.gif

Marmello are a five member girl band who debuted earlier this year with ‘Puppet’. This is one of those songs that I really liked at first listen and I was glad to have found out about Marmello. They’re really good and I don’t particularly listen to many K-Pop bands so they’re quite interesting to me. This song is so good and you should definitely listen to it.

8. HALO – Here I Am

giphy.gif

I listened to HALO because I heard they were coming to London and I figured that maybe if I liked them then I could go and see them. Unfortunately I really doubt I’m going to be able to because I’m super broke whilst trying to afford Japan and South Korea next year but I’m still a fan of this song. I didn’t really know what to expect but I was impressed and now I’m really disappointed that I won’t be seeing them! If you live in Europe and you can see them then give them a listen, they’re pretty good!

7. D.Holic – Colour Me Rad

DHolic colour me rad gif.gif

Unfortunately D.Holic disbanded earlier this year when they were down to literally just one member which sucks because they have some really good songs. ‘Colour Me Rad’ is definitely my favourite because it’s just so good! It gets me so lit every time I listen to it and I’m surprised it’s not more popular. D.Holic are another example of people claiming they don’t listen to girl groups because they don’t like ‘cute songs’ yet D.Holic were constantly slept on!

6. Sonamoo – I Like U Too Much

Sonamoo I Like U Too Much gif.gif

My favourite Sonamoo song is actually ‘Déjà vu’ but that doesn’t really reflect their sound anymore. They changed concepts and whilst I still enjoy them I kind of wish they’d carried on with songs similar to Déjà vu. Either way, ‘Like U Too Much’ is still a really great, catchy song! Sonamoo are so good and I’m sad that they’re slept on, please give them a try.

5. Matilda – You Bad! Don’t Make Me Cry

Matilda You Bad Don't Make Me Cry gif.gif

Matilda are another group that don’t bother with the ‘cute’ concept but people still don’t care. Although the title ‘You Bad! Don’t Make Me Cry’ is a little cringe it’s a brilliant song and probably one of my favourites. At first listen I wasn’t a big fan but now it’s grown on me it’s actually really catchy and I listened to it a lot when I first got into it.

4. Crayon Pop – Doo Doom Chit

Crayon Pop Doo Doom Chit gif.gif

I know that Crayon Pop’s songs can be a little weird but they’re so fun and catchy! I don’t see why so many people have an issue with them. I love ‘Doo Doom Chit’, it’s so cheery and the choreography always manages to cheer me up. It’s so different to ‘Bar Bar Bar’ and unfortunately that’s the only song people want to remember them by. They have so many good songs but everyone just lost interest and it’s sad.

3. COCOSORI – Dark Circle

CocoSori Dark Circle 2 gif.gif

People need to stop sleeping on COCOSORI! Their songs are so much fun and they’re so catchy. Yes, the music videos are weird but what’s wrong with that? Personally I think ‘Dark Circle’ is one of my favourite music videos because it’s just so random. I really can’t rate this song high enough and I’m sad they’ve only got two. Apparently they raised enough money with their gofundme so hopefully they’ll be having a comeback soon! Listen to ‘Dark Circle’, it’s good!

2. 24K – Only You

24K Only You gif.gif

Again, 24K are another group that are slept on and it makes no sense. 24K have really good songs and they are so, so lovely to their fans. ‘Only You’ is their most recent comeback and I really like it, it has a different sound compared to their previous songs like ‘Bingo’ or ‘Superfly’. To be honest pretty much all of their songs are great so just listen to any of them and stan 24K because they’re amazing!

1. Good Day – Rolly

Good Day Rolly gif.gif

I don’t know what it is about this song but I actually really love it, I’ve had it on repeat for the last few days. I don’t particularly know much about Good Day other than they’re a ten member girl group who debuted earlier this year with ‘Rolly’. This is another upbeat, cute and fun song and I just can’t stop listening to it. If you haven’t already listened to it then give it a chance because it’s really good and the girls are obviously extremely talented.

So those are my top ten favourite underrated songs, let me know below which songs you love that you think are overrated!

Top Ten Favourite K-Pop Girl Groups and Bias’

When listening to K-Pop I’m more of a girl group stan than a boy group stan so I thought I’d write a quick list of my ten favourite girl groups, who my bias is and my favourite song from each of them!

10. TWICE

TWICE gif.gif

People seem to either really love TWICE or they can’t stand them like they have no in between. I really liked their first couple of songs but I wasn’t a big fan of ‘TT’ or ‘Signal’. The one thing I don’t like is when people compare them to Girls’ Generation like can’t we just let TWICE be TWICE? I do think they’re all talented and their songs are a lot of fun so I’d love to see them live one day. The girls all seem really sweet so yeah I’d definitely recommend them even though I imagine every K-Pop fan has listened to at least one of their songs.

Favourite song: Like Ooh-Ahh
Bias: Dahyun

9. IOI

IOI gif.gif

Did they really have to disband after one year? Could we not have just kept them together? I’m so glad I got to see them live at K-Con Paris but really sad I didn’t quite appreciate it enough. To be fair their set was a bit boring because although they opened with ‘Pick Me’ they then sang two slow songs and that was the end of that. I think that’s because apparently Somi was too young to go on stage though. But yeah I honestly loved IOI for the year they were around and their last song made me cry. I’m so proud of how much they achieved in just one year and I hope they continue to do well with their new groups/paths!

Favourite song: Dream Girls
Bias: Chungha

8. Red Velvet

Red Velvet gif.gif

Recently Red Velvet’s songs are a little strange in the sense that it takes me a few listens to become a fan. As I stated in a previous post, I hated ‘Russian Roulette’ when I first heard it but now it’s my favourite song. I hated ‘Rookie’ at first listen but now I love it. I thought ‘Red Flavour’ was okay but it took me a few listens to fully appreciate it. Their first few songs though were brilliant at first listen, I love ‘Dumb Dumb’ and ‘Ice Cream Cake’ so much. I’m glad Red Velvet are so popular, they really deserve it they’re so talented.

Favourite song: Russian Roulette
Bias: Seulgi

7. EXID

EXID gif.gif

I’m so glad I’ve finally seen EXID live I’m just so sad Solji wasn’t there. Either way I really hope that ‘London Korean Festival’ becomes a yearly tradition or something because it was awesome. Not quite on the same level as ‘K-Con Paris’ but you know beggars can’t be choosers. I’m getting off topic here. EXID are so good and they’re a group that are constantly slept on by K-Pop fans who are like “Oh I don’t like cute songs that’s why I don’t listen to girl groups”. Here are EXID, existing, bringing out absolute bangers and people keep ignoring them. To be fair compared to some groups they are building up quite a good fan base but for good reason! They’re all so talented, I can’t recommend them enough.

Favourite song: Lie
Bias: LE

6. AOA

AOA gif.gif

I couldn’t stand AOA when I first listened to them. I was listening to a ‘K-Pop Girl Groups 2015’ playlist so the song ‘Heart Attack’ came up and I hated it. So for a while I assumed all their songs sounded like that and didn’t really give them a chance. I can’t even remember what song I ended up listening to by them but I started to really like them! I think it was around the time of their ‘Good Luck’ comeback and I was like “Oh this sounds nothing like Heart Attack and I actually really like it”. Now I love AOA and I’m so sad that Choa left! I hope AOA keep releasing music and I’d love to see them live one day.

Favourite song: Mini Skirt
Bias: Jimin

5. G-Friend

G-Friend gif.gif

Like most fans I first discovered G-Friend through the fancam of their performance of ‘Me Gustas Tu’ which they performed on a wet stage which meant they kept slipping over but they still carried on like absolute pros. I watched their dance practice video and thought they were brilliant and I was even more impressed with their ‘Rough’ dance practice. Although I loved them I couldn’t help secretly agreeing with everyone that their songs sounded very similar. They’re easier to distinguish after a few listens but at first listen they are very similar sounding. Until they released ‘Fingertip’ and slayed my existence. I love that song more than I love myself. G-Friend are amazing and probably one of the most talented girl groups at dancing. I love them all so much!

Favourite song: Fingertip
Bias: Umji

4. Oh My Girl

Oh My Girl gif.gif

Oh My Girl’s ‘Liar Liar’ was amazing at first listen but I couldn’t get into many of their other songs. I thought their ‘A-ing’ comeback was a little annoying and their debut song ‘Cupid’ was also a little annoying. But I loved ‘Closer’ and the music video was such aesthetic goals. Then their comeback with ‘Colouring Book’ was also really good and I realised that actually, I kind of love Oh My Girl. Their music videos are always so pretty and aesthetically pleasing. If you’ve never listened to ‘Oh My Girl’ then I really recommend that you do, they’re so good!

Favourite song: Liar Liar
Bias: Hyojung

3. Crayon Pop

Crayon Pop gif.gif

For a long time Crayon Pop were my favourite group, they were the first K-Pop group I ever listened to and they’re the reason I became a fan in the first place. I’m sick of everyone’s negativity towards them like ‘oh they’re childish’, ‘they got famous by luck’ and ‘their songs are really annoying’. Okay maybe they’re not for everyone and I get that but then just don’t listen to them? Their songs are fun, I don’t see the issue. And they had to promote their music on the streets to gain attention because no shows would let them promote so I will not stand for anyone saying they didn’t work hard to get where they are today.

I can understand people finding their older songs annoying and repetitive like yes ‘Bar Bar Bar’ is repetitive and I didn’t like it at first but it grew on me. But then their comebacks like ‘Dancing All Night’, ‘FM’ and ‘Doo Doom Chit’ were just completely slept on. Also I love reading comments like ‘oh their dances are always so easy’. They’re easy to pick up but not easy to do like have you tried dancing to ‘Bar Bar Bar’ whilst looking as flawless as them?

I’m really sad that Soyul left and that all the girls have left Chrome but hopefully they will reunite to release something new soon. I’d love it if they could continue as a four member group but I’ll continue to support their solo activities as long as the girls are happy.

Favourite song: Doo Doom Chit
Bias: Gummi

2. Mamamoo

Mamamoo gif.gif

Mamamoo were another group I couldn’t stand when I first listened to them. I didn’t understand why everyone was hyping them up so much, I just didn’t like their songs. Until I ended up watching the same funny moments collage and ended up loving the girls personally. I gave their music another chance and ended up really liking them in the end. Even now I need to give their songs a few listens before I fully love them.

I do understand why people dislike Mamamoo like they have done some problematic stuff but ultimately you can still love someone whilst accepting that they’re not perfect. Personally I think they’re very caring of their fans and that’s all I can ask for. I don’t think any of them deliberately set out to offend or upset people. I’m not going to delve too deep into that though.

Mamamoo are insanely talented when it comes to singing, if I had half their talent maybe I’d be able to achieve something with my life. If you haven’t given them a listen I would recommend it because they’re such good singers and their songs are a lot of fun!

Favourite song: Aze Gag (Dad Jokes)
Bias: Moonbyul

1. Girls’ Generation

Girls Generation gif.gif

How can you not love the nation’s number one girl group? They’ve been around for ten years now and they’re still slaying. Although I was a bit disappointed with ‘All Night’ and ‘Holiday’ I still love them – it’s not that the songs were bad because they weren’t, I liked them but I would’ve preferred them if they weren’t 10th anniversary songs. They didn’t seem to have much meaning to what was actually quite a huge achievement. They’ve made it ten years and they got poor promotions for generic songs.

Girls’ Generation were another group I didn’t like at first listen because I wasn’t a fan of ‘I Got A Boy’. K-Pop still kind of blows my mind because I’m used to growing up listening to a group and having all their songs sound similar, you know? So it was strange getting into K-Pop and realising that just because I didn’t like this song by a certain group didn’t mean I wouldn’t like their other songs because often they change concepts and sounds with each new comeback. With Girls’ Generation ‘I Got A Boy’ is completely different to ‘Gee’ isn’t it?

So eventually ‘I Got A Boy’ grew on me so I decided to listen to more stuff and that’s when I realised what a range of concepts Girls’ Generation had spanned across. It took me a few listens but I soon got used to the changing concepts and now I love most of their songs. The only title track I’m not a fan of was ‘Genie’ because that leg dance move is so annoying. But their songs are so good, especially ‘The Boys’, ‘Flower Power’ and ‘Love & Girls’.

For a long time I wouldn’t have classed Girls’ Generation as my favourite group but after their tenth anniversary comeback I know they are. I love all the girls so much, including Jessica even though I didn’t become a fan until she’d left. I’ll fully support any solo activity they do now and in the future.

I’m sad to hear that Tiffany, Sooyoung and Seohyun have decided not to renew their contracts with SM. I’m not surprised about Sooyoung as I don’t think SM appreciated her enough but Tiffany and Seohyun have surprised me. I hope the girls still continue as Girls’ Generation for a while longer somehow, I’d hate for them to disband now – I need to see them live first!

Favourite song: I Got A Boy
Bias: Sunny

Well there you go, I hope you learnt a little something about me. Feel free to leave your favourite girl groups in the comments and any recommendations you have!
