30 Favourite K-Pop Songs of 2018

TWICE.jpg

I’ve only made this for fun, similar to when I made last year’s post. This is just my opinion, feel free to disagree or leave comments with any songs you think I missed this year! I’m only featuring groups once on the list and the songs could be comebacks, debuts, solo releases and it’s not just K-Pop some Japanese songs may be included. Here goes nothing!

30. KHAN – I’m Your Girl?

KHAN I'm Your Girl.gif

I don’t know much about KHAN but I came across a tweet on Twitter hyping up this song so I decided to check it out. It’s a good song – not my favourite from 2018 but still a good song nonetheless. I wish KHAN every success for the future!

29. Moonbyul ft. Seulgi – Selfish

Selfish gif.gif

Considering Moonbyul is my Mamamoo bias and Seulgi is my Red Velvet bias it’s safe to say that when I heard about this song I was super excited. The girls suited each other so well and it was an amazing collab. We need more collabs between companies, this song was amazing!

28. Oh My Girl – Secret Garden

Oh My Girl Secret Garden gif.gif

Last year Oh My Girl were at number 16 on my list with ‘Colouring Book’ but unfortunately this year they’ve dropped a few places because I wasn’t really a fan of their comebacks this year. I’m not sure what it is because I know I’m not a fan of like the chill vibe in songs but ‘Closer’ was relatively chill and I love that song so much. I’m not sure; I just wasn’t a big fan of Oh My Girl’s releases this year. But ‘Secret Garden’ still made it to the list because it is a sweet song!

27. Pristin V – Get It

Pristin V Get It gif.gif

My friend Jess probably would’ve placed this song a lot higher up the list because she loved this song. I remember at one point she’d give me a lift places and this song would be on repeat the entire time. We went to a K-Pop Night in Birmingham and she requested that the DJ play this song (I don’t think he did which she was disappointed about). It is a good song but not really 100% my taste. Still a good song though!

26. Nature – Some (You’ll be Mine)

Some gif.gif

Nature only debuted this year and I think this was another song I found through people raving on Twitter. At first I’m not sure this is the song for me because it’s quite sweet but then the chorus hits and it goes hard. The girls’ dancing is amazing and the song is really good! I hope they’re another group that continue to do well.

25. EXID – Lady

EXID Lady gif.gif

Everyone’s been raving about EXID’s ‘I Love You’ but truthfully, I wasn’t a massive fan. Obviously I’m over the moon that Solji’s back so I wanted to love it but unfortunately I didn’t. To be truthful I’m not the biggest fan of EXID’s new stuff because it doesn’t feel as iconic as their old stuff but ‘Lady’ was still a good song and I’m still looking forward to future EXID releases.

24. NCT U – Baby Don’t Stop

Baby Don't Stop gif.gif

I feel like the only reason I listen to NCT songs is because Becca sings them on repeat so I end up checking them out because they’re stuck in my head. I first heard this song when on holiday in Greece. We were driving through Crete and Becca was in charge of the playlist and she played this song. I actually enjoyed it so the next day I asked if she could put it on again. I’m not the biggest NCT fan but they do have some bops, this one included!

23. Cosmic Girls – Dreams Come True

Dreams Come True gif.gif

Cosmic Girls came in at 26th on last year’s list with ‘I Wish’ – with hindsight I probably would’ve ranked that song higher because I love it more as time has gone on. No doubt something similar will happen with ‘Dreams Come True’ because although I think it’s a good song, it’s not my favourite song ever. But it’s still a great song; I can’t wait to see what Cosmic Girls release in 2019!

22. Laysha – Pink Label

Pink Label gif.gif

I only discovered Laysha this year with their song ‘Chocolate Cream’ which I instantly loved. So when they dropped their ‘Pink Label’ comeback I was quick to watch it and loved it pretty much straightaway. It’s a cool song!

21. J-Hope – daydream

daydream gif.gif

J-Hope is my BTS bias so when I found out he was releasing a solo song I was over the moon and he definitely didn’t disappoint. I loved pretty much everything about it, the song, the music video… It was all amazing and you could tell how hard he’d worked on it. I’m so proud of my boy and I love this song so much!

20. Hyolyn – Dally

Dally gif.gif

Okay but to have a body and able to dance like Hyolyn… Would actually be a dream come true. This song is absolutely perfect for Hyolyn and she absolutely slayed it. I think it took me a couple of listens to get into but once I did I was gone, it’s such a good song.

19. Jennie – Solo

Solo gif.gif

I’m a bit sick of people moaning that this sounded like ‘Gashina’. I love this song and I think Jennie did amazing. As the first member of Black Pink to do a solo I think she did incredibly well. It’s a good song and I loved it from first listen. I hope more Black Pink members get solos in the future because this one was awesome.

18. 24K – Bonnie n Clyde

24K Bonnie n Clyde gif.gif

So 24K made the announcement this year that Kisu was joining the military and that they’d added a new member called Kiyong. It was their first comeback without Kisu and I was a little disappointed as Kisu’s always been quite high on my bias list. But this song was still amazing and I love Kiyong, he’s so sweet. I went to see them in Paris and had the best time ever; hearing this song live was amazing. I can’t wait to see what 24K comeback with in 2019!

17. Oh My Girl Banhana – Banana Allergy Monkey

Banana Allergy Monkey gif.gif

Okay, there’s been some divide about this song… But I don’t care; I think it’s a cute and fun song! I don’t care if it’s a bit childish; sometimes music can just be fun! I preferred this song to Oh My Girl’s main releases this year and loved that they didn’t take themselves too seriously and just went for it. I wasn’t 100% sure at first but as time went on I loved it a lot. Definitely one of my favourite songs of 2018!

16. Hyo – Sober

Hyo Sober gif.gif

I wasn’t 100% certain on this song at first but after a few listens I suddenly couldn’t stop listening to it. I don’t normally like English versions of K-Pop songs but I ended up preferring the English version to this song for some reason. Hyoyeon just absolutely killed it. I also loved ‘Punk Right Now’ as well but ‘Sober’ was definitely higher up on my list of favourite 2018 songs. I can’t wait to see what she releases in 2019!

15. LOONA yyxy – love4eva

love4eva gif.gif

Pretty much every K-Pop fan has heard of LOONA due to the loyal fan base who constantly spam pretty much everything with comments saying ‘anyway stan LOONA’. Ever since I’d heard about LOONA’s concept I’d wanted to become a fan but didn’t really enjoy their debut. However I loved the yyxy subunit song of ‘love4eva’ right from the first listen. I also love the music video and just pretty much everything about it. It’s such a good song!

14. Oh!GG – ‘Lil Touch

Lil Touch gif.gif

Girls’ Generation were at 24 on my list last year with ‘Holiday’ – it’s safe to say I was way more impressed with this year’s comeback. Although I’m sad that there are only five members left it’s also good in a way because members who previously didn’t get many lines are now getting a chance to shine. I’m so glad Sunny got a chance to showcase her talent, although was annoyed at comments like ‘wow where has Sunny’s talent been all these years?’ Um right there in front of you, she’s just now getting a chance to actually show it. ‘’Lil Touch’ was an amazing song and if you haven’t heard it then you’re honestly missing out.

13. Mamamoo – Egotistic

Egotistic gif.gif

I didn’t really feel like giving Mamamoo much of a chance after listening to ‘Starry Night’ because I wasn’t really a fan and figured I was going off them. Then Jess gave me a lift home and this was her current song that she had on repeat. I gave it a listen on Spotify and actually ended up loving it. It really suits Mamamoo and I feel like they’ve found a sound that suits them. It doesn’t make me like ‘Starry Night’ though.

12. (G)I-DLE – $$$

G(I)DLE gif.gif

Although I liked LATATA I wasn’t over the moon impressed with it. I still liked (G)I-DLE so when this song came up in my recommended I decided to give it a listen and instantly fell in love with it. (G)I-DLE are so talented and I’m so glad I discovered this song because it’s amazing.

11. TWICE – Yes or Yes?

Yes or Yes gif.gif

TWICE can sometimes be a bit hit and miss with their songs but I feel like they’ve done nothing but impress me this year. Each new comeback has been my favourite – I put ‘Yes or Yes’ on the list as that was their latest release and I loved it at first listen. But ‘What is Love’ and ‘Dance the Night Away’ were amazing as well. I can’t wait to see what TWICE release next year but I really hope they take a well-deserved break soon!

10. Black Pink – Forever Young

Black Pink Forever Young gif.gif

I loved DU-DUU DU-DUU at first listen but wasn’t so sure about ‘Forever Young’ initially because once the beat dropped it was almost like listening to a completely different song. But it grew on me and overtime became my favourite Black Pink song. I just love pretty much everything about it – even the beat drop I initially disliked.

9. SoRi – Touch

SoRi Touch gif.gif

I love CocoSori so much but I hadn’t been a big fan of Coco’s solo song. That didn’t put me off trying SoRi’s solo and I’m so glad it didn’t because I LOVED ‘Touch’ so much. I had it on repeat for ages when I first listened to it because I loved it. SoRi is amazing and I love her, she’s so talented. I also loved ‘I’m Ready’ from this year but ‘Touch’ is still definitely my favourite.

8. G-Friend – Memoria

Memoria gif.gif

G-Friend have had some good comebacks this year but there was something about ‘Memoria’ that I automatically loved. This was another song that I had on repeat for ages and is probably my favourite G-Friend song at the moment. It’s just so sweet and so very G-Friend. I love it!

7. gugudan – Not That Type

Not That Type gif.gif

To be honest I’ve never really listened to gugudan – well I did listen to a couple of songs but wasn’t particularly impressed so didn’t bother again for a while. Then I decided to give ‘Not That Type’ a listen and oh my god, I was blown away. This song was amazing and I will definitely be checking out more gugudan in the New Year!

6. AOA – Bingle Bangle

Bingle Bangle gif.gif

A few people were worried that without Choa that AOA would flop, but let’s be real… ‘Bingle Bangle’ was one of the best songs that AOA have ever released. Jimin’s rap part is definitely the best bit but it was a good song all around. I love AOA so much and this is definitely my current favourite song by them.

5. MOMOLAND – BAAM

MOMOLAND BAAM gif.gif

It’s crazy that on last year’s list MOMOLAND were at the bottom of the list with ‘Freeze!’ This year has been a good year for MOMOLAND’s careers since they blew up with their song ‘Bboom Bboom’. Unfortunately MOMOLAND have also low-key become the ‘in group’ to dislike but I love them and I loved ‘BAAM’.  While most people preferred ‘Bboom Bboom’ I much preferred ‘BAAM’. I hate that everyone’s moaning that ‘BAAM’ sounds quite similar – after the success of ‘Bboom Bboom’ of course they were going to play it safe, they need to establish a solid fan base before experimenting with different sounds. I’m proud of all MOMOLAND have achieved and I hope they continue their success in 2019.

4. BTS – Idol

BTS Idol gif.gif

I’d been worried I was going off BTS last year but this year they’ve definitely reclaimed their place as my favourite boy group. It might help that I finally got to see them live at their own concert (after previously seeing them at K-Con Paris). I loved so many BTS songs this year but my favourite title track was almost definitely ‘Idol’. It’s just so much fun and was an amazing song to see live (from what I could see considering I was at the back of the venue).

3. Red Velvet – Really Bad Boy

Really Bad Boy gif.gif

Red Velvet are another group that released bop after bop this year but I especially loved ‘Really Bad Boy’. I know a few people will disagree but I actually preferred it to ‘Bad Boy’, I don’t even care. I loved it from first listen and the music video is amazing. I can’t wait to see what Red Velvet release in 2019 because I have no doubt that it’ll be amazing.

2. Dreamcatcher – What

What gif.gif

I love Dreamcatcher but ‘What’ absolutely blew me away. I’d seen it was released but take a few days to actually get around to listening it – when I did though I loved it instantly, it reminded me of when I’d first heard them with ‘Chase Me’. I couldn’t stop listening to it until eventually I’d listened to it one too many times. But it’s still an amazing song and one of the best of 2019. Here’s hoping Dreamcatcher come back to Europe one day so I can see them live all over again!

1. CLC – Black Dress

Black Dress gif.gif

I did like ‘Hobgoblin’ but nothing could’ve prepared me for how much I loved ‘Black Dress’. It was definitely my favourite comeback of 2019, I knew from the moment it was released that it would be. CLC are amazing and can slay pretty much every concept and they did amazing at this one. I love everything about it and if you haven’t listened to it then what the hell are you doing? I wish CLC all the success in the world for 2019.

Feel free to let me know if you think I missed any amazing comebacks, debuts or whatever in 2019!

Favourite K-Pop Covers

Oh My Girl.jpg

Occasionally K-Pop artists do covers of other artists songs, both K-Pop and western ones. I haven’t listened to tons but I did want to write a list of my top ten favourite covers performed by K-Pop artists. Enjoy!

10. TWICE/G-Friend – Gee

TWICE & G-Friend - Gee.gif

It was awesome to see TWICE and G-Friend covering each other’s songs and interesting too considering they have different sounds. TWICE covered ‘Me Gustas Tu’ and G-Friend covered ‘Like Ooh-Ahh’. Then certain members of both groups came together to cover Girls’ Generation’s ‘Gee’, arguably one of the most iconic girl group songs. It was great to see the two groups collab as there are so many fan wars these days and it was a fun performance for their fans.

9. BESTie – Mamacita

BESTie Mamacita gif.gif

‘Mamacita’ is arguably my favourite Super Junior song so to hear BESTie had covered it was pretty cool. BESTie have amazing vocals and their cover of the song was really good and showcased their talent well. I definitely think they should do more covers in the future.

8. Girls’ Generation/f(x) – Sorry, Sorry

Girls' Generation & f(x) - Sorry Sorry.gif

Another girl group collab! Interactions within companies are always lovely to see so to watch Girls’ Generation and f(x) performing a Super Junior song was awesome. They absolutely rocked it, I just wish they’d done the entire thing. The outfits were good and the whole thing was just on point. I’d love to see another collab stage like this.

7. Hyoyeon (Girls’ Generation) – Please Don’t Stop The Music

Hyoyeon Please Don't Stop the Music gif.gif

I grew up listening to Rihanna so was excited to hear Hyoyeon had covered this song. It suited her voice so well and I love it when she gets solo songs because it proves the haters wrong – Hyoyeon CAN sing and I’m sick of people saying she can’t. A song like ‘Please Don’t Stop The Music’ was perfect for Girls’ Generation’s dancing queen and I’d love to hear more Hyoyeon covers in the future – although her own solo songs are amazing too!

6. 24K – Talk Dirty to Me

24K Talk Dirty to Me gif.gif

24K usually do a few covers at their shows, at their most recent one Jeonguk danced to Black Pink’s ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’. Back when I first saw them they performed this along with a few other covers including Big Bang’s ‘Bang Bang Bang’. ‘Talk Dirty to Me’ was one of my favourite covers of the night, I remember getting so lit with Becca watching this at the Amsterdam concert even though I hate watching back the video I took because all you can hear is me yell “TORK DIRTEE TO MEH” and then a lot of screaming. But honestly, it was lit!

5. Dreamcatcher – Really Really

Dreamcatcher Really Really gif.gif

To be 100% honest with you I didn’t like this song until Dreamcatcher covered it. I didn’t really give Winner a chance but when Dreamcatcher dropped their cover I loved it. I think I still low-key prefer Dreamcatcher’s version and I wish they’d performed it in full at their concert, they sang a little bit of it but not all of it. It was a good cover, they do quite a lot of covers so I’ll definitely keep checking them out!

4. Jessica Jung – Gravity

Jessica Gravity gif.gif

I included this song in my ’10 Slow Songs I actually Like’ list and that felt like a bit of an achievement for me. When it starts it doesn’t sound like a song I’d be interested in but Jessica’s vocals really suck me in and I just love everything about it. It’s an amazing cover and really showcases Jessica’s amazing voice. I need to listen to more of her solo stuff.

3. Sooyoung (Girls’ Generation) – Sway

Sooyoung Sway gif.gif

This isn’t necessarily a song I would’ve picked for Sooyoung to cover but I’m so glad they did because the whole performance was amazing from Sooyoung’s dancing to the vocals to her outfit, the whole thing was just perfect. Sooyoung is an amazing singer and it’s a shame she doesn’t get as much of an opportunity in Girls’ Generation to showcase that. Hopefully we’ll get more solo stuff in the future!

2. Mamamoo – Delilah

Mamamoo Delilah gif

The vocals in this absolutely blow my mind. Solar, Wheein and Hwasa absolutely go for those high notes and it kills me every time. And Moonbyul’s rapping definitely brings a bit of individuality to the song and they owned the entire thing. I just love the entire thing, it gives me goosebumps pretty much every time I listen to it and I love it.

1. Sunny (Girls’ Generation) – 3

Sunny 3 gif.gif

I’m not really sure why this is my favourite but I’ve listened to it a ton of times. Sunny is my absolute Girls’ Generation bias and it really annoys me when people claim she doesn’t get many lines because she’s not a good singer. Yes, she is and this song proves that. It was the perfect song for Sunny to sing and I love the entire performance. I wish I’d been able to see it live but there’s no chance of that now. I just have the cover on my iPod to listen to over and over again.

Well there we go, there’s my ten favourite K-Pop covers – feel free to leave me a comment with some recommendations and your own favourites!

Top 10 Favourite 24K Songs

24K 3

It’s no secret that I’m a massive 24K fan. I’ve seen them live four times now and definitely intend to see them again if/when they next return to Europe. I don’t care if I have to travel abroad. I will do it! Anyway, I’ve written a few lists of my favourite songs for other groups so I decided to do one for 24K. Here goes nothing!

10. U R SO CUTE

24K U R So Cute gif.gif

I don’t care what anybody says, I love this song even if it doesn’t sound anything like the music they release now. They don’t perform it live anymore and like I don’t really blame them but I low-key wish they did. I would be absolutely jamming. “I’m breaking down!”

9. Our Block

24K Our Block gif.gif

This song goes hard and I live for it. It’s not my absolute favourite but it is lit and I love it when they perform it live. When I was first getting into 24K this was one of the songs that Jess recommend to me and I really liked it from first listen. Definitely recommend this one.

8. Still 24K

24K Still 24K gif.gif

This song seems really important since 24K have been through a few line-up changes and now the only original members left are Cory and Kisu, and Kisu’s currently in the military. Regardless of the member changes the group have grown and come far and this song showcases that. I think Hongseob and Changsun were just added to the group at this point and I couldn’t imagine 24K without them. I love this song and I wish I’d watched this MV before watching the ‘Bingo’ one because ‘Bingo’ continues from this one and sort of makes more sense if you’ve seen this one first.

7. Superfly

24K Superfly gif.gif

This was 24K’s ‘popular’ song, if you know one 24K song it’s probably Superfly. And it is good, it definitely deserved the fame it got and so much more! The dance goes hard man and it’s another song that’s amazing to see live, it always gets the crowd really lit. The song is really good and it’s another one of the first songs I listened to when I became a fan.

6. Honestly

24K Honestly gif.gif

Okay I’ll admit something, I hadn’t actually listened to this song until they sang it to me. And I really love the song but because it’s associated with that memory I do tend to freak out a bit whilst listening to it. But it’s still such a sweet song and one I definitely recommend!

5. Bingo

24K Bingo gif 2.gif

This was the first song I ever listened to by them which seems so long ago because I’m absolute trash now. When I first saw them live last January this was pretty much the only song I knew confidently. I’d listened to other songs but I ‘knew’ this one and proper went for it at the show. It was amazing and it’s always one of my favourites when they perform it live.

4. To for You

Kisu gif.gif

This song was written by Kisu and was included on the latest album because he wouldn’t be taking part in promotions due to being enlisted in the military. The title is based on the fandom name which is ‘24U’. On their latest Europe tour Kisu had prepared a video for at the concert which was an English cover of this song which had most of the audience crying. It’s one of those songs that I stick on whenever I’m feeling stressed and I think it’s one of my favourites off the album. It just really chills me out and I’m glad this song exists.

3. Bonnie n Clyde

24K Bonnie n Clyde gif.gif

24K’s latest comeback and it was absolutely amazing. They introduced their new member Kiyong and I’m sorry but he’s actually the sweetest person on the planet? He’s just so cute! I wasn’t sure on first listen but after a few I was sold and now it’s one of my favourite 24K songs. The boys just continue to impress with every comeback and I wish they had more fans to appreciate their amazing songs.

2. Hey You

24K Hey You gif 2.gif

For a long time this was my favourite song because I love the dance and I just think the song is really lit. I’m pretty sure Jinhong and Hui were introduced for this comeback but they wore masks so as not to reveal their identities. It’s such a good song, please listen to this if you’re gonna listen to one of their songs!

1. Only You

24K Only You gif.gif

This was the first comeback they had when I was officially a fan! And I loved everything about it. The music video is aesthetic goals, the boys look amazing and I love the dance. I loved it upon first listen and I’m so sad I didn’t own the album at the London Fan Meet because I could’ve had a signed copy BUT NO I was too broke. I did get given the album for my birthday though which was good. I definitely recommend this song, it’s amazing!

There we have it, my ten favourite 24K songs – feel free to leave your favourites in the comments!

24K in Paris Concert Review

24K Europe Tour.jpg

When 24K announced they were returning to Europe I was over the moon – until I realised that they weren’t coming to England this time. I was desperate to see them again but with my trip to Asia coming up this year I did wonder about giving it a miss. Or… Going to one of the shows and sleeping at the airport to do it on the cheap. Luckily I received quite a good tax return this year meaning I could turn all that into spending money for Asia and book my flights, hotel and ticket for the concert guilt free.

I debated about which show to go to but in the end settled on Paris because wherever I went I wouldn’t have much time to sightsee and I’ve already been to Paris and am going again in October. Plus it was the closest country to England so it seemed like a good idea. I got a bit excited and booked my flights and hotel before the tickets were even released.

Buying the tickets was a bit of a nightmare – they went on sale at 5PM UK time and I was debating staying at work to book them but luckily decided to leave work early to buy them at home. Just as well because the website went extremely slowly causing quite a bit of stress. I was going out with my friends that night and had to be showered and ready to go to Hirst’s for 7:30PM. Becca came to mine at about 7:10PM and as she stressed about her make-up I was still stressing about the tickets – with five minutes to spare before we were meant to leave I managed to secure a gold ticket and headed out to have a good time safe in the knowledge that everything was now sorted.

I decided to fly to Paris the day before the concert so I could get rested and that was good ‘cos it meant I could take three days off work instead of two. I’d asked my friends Becca and Jess if they wanted to come but neither of them had the holiday or the money so I had to set off on my own. On a plane. And I’m an extremely nervous flyer.

I had already flown to Poland by myself earlier on this year but I was still terrified at the thought of another flight alone and didn’t help myself by showing up at the airport way too early. I’d gone through security and had lunch with another two hours left to spare before my flight. I managed to distract myself by watching Friends episodes on my phone until finally it was time! Luckily I was sat next to one of the nicest women I’ve met in my life who told me she was a nervous flyer but actually spent most of her time comforting me on the way over! She kept calling me her little sister and tried to teach me some French but I was a bit useless and don’t remember most of it.

Arriving at Charles de Gaulle was just as stressful because the airport was massive and I found it difficult to navigate and then I had the travel ticket stress. The machine wanted me to pay 50 euros for a three day ticket but I wasn’t sure if it was the right type anyway. In the end I found a lady who sold me a week pass for 25 euros but told me I’d need to stick a little photo of myself on the travel card. She seemed genuinely surprised to find out I don’t carry a little photo of myself around with me and told me I’d need to get one. I didn’t bother; I didn’t really use the metro that much anyway.

I’d been worried I’d find the trains a bit difficult on my own but I’d had experience on the French metro with my friends and it was relatively easy to navigate so I got to my hotel quite quickly. It was a nice hotel, it was clean and I felt safe but unfortunately the room was stifling hot so I didn’t get the best night’s sleep. But I was still up bright and early the next day to get to the venue for the first check-in!

20180807_110021.jpg

I got there at 11:20 and there were already quite a few fans there and I knew I had to get a number but I wasn’t sure who to ask and I felt a bit intimidated so I just sat on my own and waited to see what happened. About five or ten minutes later 24K themselves walked down the steps I’d just been down and headed into the venue. I tweeted about it but shout out to the French 24U who were obviously excited about seeing the boys but kept their distance and didn’t scream at them as they came down. A few people tried to take pictures but put their phones/cameras away when the manager asked them not to.

I eventually saw a family going up to get their numbers so I plucked up the courage to go and get mine and a really nice staff member explained to me in English about the fan projects, when things were happening etc. She was actually amazing, she’d come down the queue every so often and give updates or instructions in French, look at me and remember I spoke English and translated it for me. I didn’t get her name but she had dip-dyed blue hair and she was fab!

At 11:30 we all queued up for ‘check-in’ which took a while and then we waited for the selfie tickets to go on sale at 12. I somehow got adopted by the family who had gotten their numbers just before me – they didn’t speak any English but when they saw I was alone they offered to stay with me and we got by with our limited understanding of each other’s languages and gestures. The Mom even bought me a bottle of water and nothing for her kids – you know like in Harry Potter when Ron’s Mom treats Harry like the favourite child? It was like that. They were with a little kid and 24K gave her a lot of attention, she was really sweet and absolutely deserved it.

My plan had been to grab my selfie tickets at 12 then do a little sightseeing before having to come back for the 2:30 check-in. This was super optimistic as the tickets didn’t go on sale until about 1PM and then it took another hour to actually buy them. I went for Cory, Jeonguk and Hongseob as I couldn’t afford every members. I’m really glad selfie tickets were an option this year but queuing for them was not fun as we had to queue outside and it was boiling hot.

I was so tired and hungry after that that I got some food at the burger stand opposite the venue and was soon joined by the French family who had some food too. The fan sign was supposed to be starting at 3 so I went to rejoin the queue but unfortunately this was delayed too and due to the size of the room that the fan sign was in we had to queue outside again, right by the river with no shade. I wouldn’t have minded too much but I was alone again at this point so I had no one to hold my space while I got myself some water. In the end I had to take the chance and ran over to buy myself two bottles because I was dying. By the time I got back the boys were in the room and we were being sat inside in about groups of 6 – 10.

Luckily I made friends with the three girls next to me in the queue who were all super nice. Their first language was French but they also spoke English so they mainly spoke to each other in French as that was their comfortable language then translated the important parts for me and if there were any announcements they kept me updated.

I was nervous about the fan sign because I was low-key (high-key) hoping the boys would remember me from the London fan meet (which I wrote about here). The night had meant so much to me that I was kind of hoping they’d remember. But unfortunately I realised they didn’t when I handed my album with my name on it to Cory and he asked me if he was pronouncing my name correctly.

I’ll be honest and say I was a little disappointed at the time but I’m kind of over it now ‘cos like to me it meant a lot but to them I guess they were just doing their job. Like when I worked at Blists Hill and people had their weddings and stuff… I don’t remember any of the brides names even though it was their special day or anything? It would’ve been nice to be remembered but they meet a lot of people so I’m not upset that they didn’t. I was in the moment a little bit but not anymore.

Cory signed my album, held my hand and said he hoped I had a good time so I thanked him and moved on to the next member which was Jeonguk. He attempted pronouncing my name, held my hand and then… The person next to me was still talking to Changsun so I couldn’t move over. So Jeonguk just looked at me without saying anything and I got so nervous that I started laughing. He gave me a weird look so I laughed harder ‘cos it was so awkward and I managed to say “It’s nice to meet you… Again” and finally the person next to me had moved on so he smiled at me and pushed my album down to Changsun.

He was really sweet, he made sure he was pronouncing my name correct and then held my hand before pushing it down to Jinhong. Jinhong had intimidated the fuck out of me last time but my interaction with him this year was nicer. I was wearing a t-shirt with two cats sat on a banana and it said ‘banana’ at the bottom so him and Changsun, who was free, both started saying ‘ban-AN-a’ and I didn’t really know what to say so I just laughed. I held his hand too and then he pushed the album down to Kiyong.

Kiyong’s the new member and I’m quite proud of 24U for being so welcoming of him – I love Red Velvet and the fandom but there are still people who bitch about the fact Yeri was added to the group whereas when Kiyong was announced everybody loved him before we even had any photos or information about him. He’s so cute, he checked the pronunciation of my name too (a common theme) and held my hand. It was nice to meet him for the first time and he’s honestly so sweet.

He pushed my album down to Hongseob and it was mostly the same, checking the pronunciation of my name, hand-holding and then he made the ‘ban-AN-a’ comment as I was walking off so I laughed. Then we had to head back outside to queue up again for the hi-touch and group photo.

Although it was torture standing outside in the heat to queue up for things I don’t blame Skey Ace for it. At the last minute there was a venue change and I think they did their best in the circumstances they were given – it was a strange venue but I’d have been fucked if they’d arranged it for a different date or something so I’m glad they got a different venue and made it work. It just sucked going back outside because by the time I got back in my face was tomato red and it just wasn’t an attractive look.

It was nice making friends with the three girls as they offered to go and get two of us some water while we watched their spaces so it made the queue a lot better especially since we were all freaking out about the fan sign. It felt like we waited a bit less this time and we were soon heading in for the hi-touch. I ended up being second in the line which I wasn’t a fan of and nearly ended up going first because I thought the girl in front of me wasn’t going to.

Maybe it was because of the delays or number of things going on but things felt a bit more rushed this year than at the London Fan Meet and this time at the hi-touch the boys just went for hi-fives instead of holding hands. Which like is fine, it was still good! The girl in front of me ended up apologising to Jinhong so I had to stand awkwardly behind her for a while which was weird.

Then we went around for the group photo and two people could stand at the ends and one girl ran in front of us to stand by Cory and I’m so awkward that I just kneeled anywhere on the floor ‘cos I didn’t wanna be a nuisance. The photos won’t be released until after the tour but I probably look a right mess and I have no idea who I was in front of – I have a feeling it was Jeonguk but I won’t know until they’re released.

After the group photo we queued up outside again to wait for the selfie event. One of the girls I was with told me that at the other venues the selfie event had been held in private rooms so it was just you, the member and some of the staff obviously. She asked one of the staff if this was the case here and we were told no all the members would be in the same room.

It was a bit weird to be honest, the members were just dotted around the room and you handed in your selfie ticket at the desk, they shouted out who you had a selfie with and this woman held onto my arm for a moment and then kind of just left me without doing anything. There were obviously other fans in the room but Cory had just finished up a selfie so I went over and handed him my phone and he was like “Hey! Let’s do this!” I like the selfie but as it was my first one I’m at my most red and I don’t like my face in it.

20180807_180748.jpg

It was awkward to navigate the room because it wasn’t very big and you were kind of just left to find the members by yourself. Jeonguk was next to Cory so I headed over to him and he was drinking some water and I felt bad ‘cos the moment I approached him he tried to quickly finish up. I think I liked this selfie the best and I set it as my phone background.

20180807_180805.jpg

Then I headed over to Hongseob who was just finishing up with somebody else and that selfie came out good too. I thanked him and turned around and bumped into Kiyong and I feel awful because he smiled and was like “Hi!” To be honest I’m not sure the staff would’ve known whether I’d had a ticket for him or not so I could’ve just gone for it but that would’ve been rude and unfair so I awkwardly smiled back and headed out of the room because that was all my selfies that I’d paid for.

20180807_180824.jpg

Luckily after that we didn’t have to go back outside we could head downstairs into the venue and we had to sit down whilst waiting for them which was a bit awkward but also a blessing as we got downstairs at about 6:45 and the concert didn’t start until 8. Most of the safety announcements were in French but I was still nearby one of the girls from the queue so she very kindly translated everything for me. She was fab but I didn’t get anybody’s names so if the girl in the yellow top who hung around with the awkward British girl is reading this, you were fab and thank you for being so nice! Unfortunately we had to move so we got split up a bit and I ended up by a group of girls who said something to me and when I replied they were like “Oh My God, you’re British too!” and I ended up chilling with them most of the night. It turned out we’d been to the exact same 24K concerts last year – both London shows and the Amsterdam one!

Eventually the boys came out and were full of energy as per usual. I can’t remember the entire set-list but I’m pretty sure they opened with ‘Superfly’. They performed a few songs then went off stage to change while a video played. We were told that in order for all fans to see we had to sit down while the videos were playing which you can imagine was a bit awkward but the videos were worth it. Kisu had prepared a video of him singing ‘To for You’ as a surprise as he couldn’t attend the concert himself.

20180807_200245.jpg

After the video 24K came back and performed a couple of songs before starting the Q&A. At first Jinhong read the questions out in English and the members would reply in Korean or some English and this was then translated to French by one of the staff. Cory told us he was losing his voice so he didn’t take as much part in the Q&A as he usually would do. Hongseob was hilarious and kept saying “Next Question! Fast Q&A!” Then Jinhong gave the piece of paper with the questions to the translator so at this point I didn’t understand much as the questions were in French and their Korean answers were translated to French. Me and the other Brits I was with tried to understand the questions but it was a bit hopeless, however the cheers from the French 24U’s suggested that the answers were good.

There were more songs and units – vocal unit, dance unit, hip-hop unit. I remember Jeonguk dancing to Black Pink’s ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ which was lit as fuck. They sang my favourites ‘Hey You’ and ‘Only You’. During ‘Blue’ we all put a yellow post-it note over our phone torches and waved them in the air then when they came out for the encore and performed the Bonnie n Clyde remix we all had banners to wave. I love fan projects like that.

20180807_210059.jpg

I was sad when the concert ended but was also low-key relieved ‘cos I could grab some water and I was eager to get back to my hotel and put my pyjamas on. I swear my legs were just pure sweat and denim at this point, it had been such a hot day. I literally sat in front of the hotel rooms’ air con drinking water for like half-an-hour when I got back, it was such a relief.

Also I managed to completely destroy my handbag. I’d popped some chocolate bars into the bottom of the bag in case I got hungry during the day but unfortunately my bag was so full of stuff that I couldn’t reach them. I do remember giving one a feel in the queue and they were very squishy so I decided to deal with them when I got back. They had melted so badly out of the packet that they were all over my stuff. Luckily my book had been at the bottom and that took the most damage because I had slipped my signed Bonnie n Clyde album in there but as it was at the top it didn’t get any chocolate on it. I managed to save everything except for the charger for my battery pack and the bag itself. It was brand new and when I got back to the UK I had to go back to Primark to buy one of the exact same kind. I was honestly gutted.

I’m so glad I went, it was definitely worth the money and I’m already counting down the days until their next Europe tour so I can see them again. Should hopefully be after me and my friends go to Asia and assuming I’m still in employment I should be able to travel again if necessary. Here’s hoping that’s not necessary and they come to the UK next time but I’ll still travel if they don’t!

What I loved the most about this tour the most was probably the fans – when I went to the London Fan Meet I found that nobody really spoke to me in the queue or inside and I felt pretty lonely even though I’d obviously loved the actual Fan Meet itself. But this time tons of people went out of their way to stop me from feeling lonely, even if they didn’t speak my language. It was worth it just for that I think.

Do’s and Don’ts of Concerts

Concert.jpg

I got the inspiration for this post when scrolling through a ‘concert unpopular opinions’ threated on Twitter and there were a lot of divided opinions in the thread. It made me want to write a post about my own general do’s and don’ts of concerts because at this point I’ve been to a fair few and sometimes the people in the crowd can make or break the concert. Feel free to disagree with any of my points and I’ll happily have a friendly debate in the comments or you can take my advice – it’s up to you!

DO plan your outfit accordingly

T-Live.jpg

Concert outfits can be difficult because we all know the moment we step inside we’re all going to turn into sweaty mess’ but if you’re queuing outside all day for a concert in January it can get a bit cold so you need to dress accordingly. If you’re gonna be in the pit at the concert it can be annoying having to hold onto your jacket but the moment you get back outside you will appreciate that jacket because within minutes the heat from the concert will be gone and you’ll be shivering.

If it’s a summer concert I’d really recommend like shorts and a vest top but to be fair even I don’t normally follow that advice. My usual concert outfit is just a pair of jeans and usually one of the band’s t-shirts if I own it. Just always remember that even if you’re seated, it’s going to get hot in there and it will probably be freezing when you come back out so prepare for that.

I remember going to a concert and there was a girl wearing a bumblebee costume (I don’t know why) and since the pit was so crazy she passed out and had to get dragged out while her friends followed her crying. There’s always one person at a concert in a onesie and I mean like, hey you do you do what you want, but I will never forget that guy that pushed past me at Slam Dunk in a teletubbies onesie. Boy absolutely stank and it can’t be comfortable wearing a onesie at a concert so why?

DON’T be worried to go on your own

FB_IMG_1503871888983.jpg

I think the first concert I went to solo was Melanie Martinez and although standing outside for over an hour in November to queue up to get inside wasn’t my idea of fun I still had a good time at the actual concert itself. Since then I’ve been to a few by myself including 24K and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and you can have a good time on your own. If your friends don’t want to go then certainly don’t let it stop you.

I understand that safety can be an aspect – I don’t get scared walking around London at night but I would feel a bit worried if I was in Birmingham. Figure something out beforehand – maybe get a hotel near the venue or ask your parents if they’d be willing to pick you up afterwards. But if what you’re worried about is people judging you for being alone then trust me when I say they won’t, nobody will care.

DO accept that you get what you pay/wait for

5SOS Selfie.jpg

When I went to see Melanie Martinez I was sat just one row from the back and when Mel came on stage everybody stood up as they often do so I stood up too, and so did a girl who was sat one seat away from me. She was maybe fourteen/fifteen years old and suddenly the woman behind her started screaming at her to sit back down. Timidly she sat back down but obviously then couldn’t see anything so her Mom encouraged her to stand back up to which these women who were there with their extremely young daughters (like maybe eight or younger) started yelling that she was ‘selfish’. Luckily everyone else came to the teenager’s defence but I’m still not over their sense of entitlement and how rude they were? Mate, you have a seat on the back row – yes it’s frustrating not being able to see but you get what you pay and why should this girl ruin her view to improve yours?

Recently at concerts where I’ve had no choice but to stand I’ve found myself behind several tall people, to which I usually take a pic and post to my Instagram story with the caption ‘tall people have no mercy’. However these tall people have waited in the queue longer than me, nabbed their spot before me and have no reason to worry about me or my view whatsoever. Fair is fair. If I wanted a perfect view I should’ve queued up long before the doors opened instead of 10 minutes beforehand (I used to queue all day but now I really can’t be bothered).

I’ll admit that yes in the heat of the moment it can be frustrating to be that short person at the back. I remember when I saw Kyary Pamyu Pamyu I didn’t even know if she was on the stage because I couldn’t see past the sea of tall men in front of me. But that’s not their issue and I’m not about to start having a go at them just because I couldn’t be bothered to queue up earlier for a better spot.

The real issue is bad venues. I’ve decided now that I really like 229 The Venue, maybe it’s ‘cos it’s not as crowded there but I can stand towards the back and still have a good view of the group whereas at ULU Live I had absolutely no chance.

DON’T make fun of others

Me + Jordan.jpg

We’ve all been there, there’s that group of people in the queue or in the venue who are making you cringe to the point where you want to die a little bit. But is it really worth ruining their night just because it makes you cringe, especially if the stuff they’re doing or saying is just a little bit of innocent fun? When queuing for K-Con some girls started dancing to TWICE’s ‘Cheer Up’ and I’m not gonna lie, it was really cringe but ultimately they were having fun and who the hell am I to ruin their good time?

A lot of the time I prefer the groups of people that make me cringe to those that are unnecessarily rude. At 24K a group of girls were chanting “24K AYE 24K AYE 24K AYE” and they were a lot nicer to stand next to than the girls on the other side of me who were saying “God, I hate people like that.” You know what love, I hate miserable cows with bad attitudes but I’m not calling you out am I?

Similarly people that spend the whole time being judgemental. I once read a girl’s opinion in a band forum that said ‘I would never the band’s t-shirt to their show, that’s so cringe. I’d wear a different band’s shirt.’ Which I thought was weird but whatever. So I went to see Block B and as I don’t own a Block B shirt I wore a BTS one then literally got called out for it on a Facebook group by a girl I’d spoken to quite politely who said she’d wanted to scream at me when she saw what shirt I was wearing. If I was meeting the group then sure whatever maybe I should’ve been a bit more sensitive but trust me when I say that I nor anybody else there dropped £110 on a ticket to disrespect Block B.

Also it’s important to point out that I’d had an amazing time at this concert whereas this girl had moaned she’d had a terrible time. I even got a wave off Kyung, one of the members, who clearly didn’t give a damn what t-shirt I was wearing. So honestly stop focusing on everybody else and just focus on you and whether you’re having a good time.

DO hand out water if you get to the barrier

Everyone in standing is dying but nobody can go to the bar to get a drink otherwise they’re gonna lose their spot. I’ve never understood people who squeeze themselves through the crowd to the front, there’s already no room and you’re just gonna barge right on through?

Anyway, if you are lucky enough to get to the barrier and they’re passing out water then pass it back man there are people dying back there. Obviously drink some yourself if you need it but don’t forget about other people. I remember at my first All Time Low concert we all stopped caring about who had already drunk from the cup, I passed it to a girl, she had a drink then gave it back to me half full and I chugged the rest. It’s super important to stay hydrated but remember there are other people you need to look out for too!

DON’T be rude to the staff

Me + Alex.jpg

I remember me, Penina and her friend got to meet All Time Low before their concert once so we were let into the arena early but I decided I needed to pee so we came out to a very confused security guard who didn’t understand how we’d already gotten into the hall – we explained to him about the meet and greet but he still didn’t understand so he made us stand there while he called over a colleague who luckily knew about the meet and greet and explained it to him. He apologised, we went to the bathroom and he let us back into the hall with no issues.

This guy was literally just doing his job and I would never dream of making him feel bad for not understanding what we were doing in the hall. This applies to all members of staff – if someone tells you to stop doing something it’s not to kill your good time, it’s probably for your safety so shut up and do what they tell you instead of being a baby about it.

DO take as many pictures and videos as you want

20180315_200724.jpg

Controversial topic – taking photos and videos at concerts. We all see that argument of ‘if you wanted to watch through a screen then stay at home, enjoy the moment at the concert’. But here’s the thing, I enjoy taking videos and updating my Instagram story throughout the concert so why the hell shouldn’t I? I’ve paid money to be there and I’ll do whatever I want with my time whilst I’m there.

I don’t really film the whole song anymore or every song, I like to record the first verse and chorus of my favourites and then spend the rest of the song ‘in the moment’ having a good time. But don’t let anyone else tell you how you should be doing it, if you want to record every moment then go for it!

DON’T sell your tickets on for 5x the price

I understand that the temptation is there. I found I couldn’t go to a Lindsey Stirling concert, something I was gutted about, so I had to sell my ticket on getmein. For face value because I’m not an absolute as*hole. There is nothing worse for a fan than desperately wanting to go to a concert only to discover the only tickets left are on sites like getmein for five times the price.

Also by jacking up the price you’re putting a lot of people off so what if you don’t sell out? Now you’re out of pocket AND you’re an as*hole. If you find you can’t go then sell it for face value or maybe like £20 or so extra because to be fair those sites do charge an admin fee. But it should never be more than double the price, it’s honestly ridiculous.

That’s all I can think of for the moment, if you have any more then please feel free to leave a comment!

K-Pop Tag

BTS 2.jpg

I love doing tags because let’s face it, everyone likes the opportunity to talk about themselves and their interests. I thought I’d do a K-Pop specific one since I’ve started writing a lot of K-Pop posts so here goes nothing! I found this here [x]

1. Favourite solo artist

I’m actually already stuck on the first question. Most of my favourite soloists are from groups. I really like MiSO at the moment and Hyuna.

MiSO gif.gif

2. Top 5 Bias Groups

24K, BTS, Oh My Girl, G-Friend and AOA

3. Do you ship anyone?

Not particularly.

4. What fan group(s) do you identify with? (i.e. VIP, Blackjack etc.)

I’m really multi-fandom so a ton. I’d say I’m a massive 24U, SONE, Buddy and ARMY though.

5. How did you get into K-Pop?

I was already a fan of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and I wanted to get into K-Pop so when I saw a photo of Crayon Pop with Lady Gaga on Tumblr I decided to give them a listen. I didn’t like them at first but the more I listened to them the more I got into them. Slowly but surely I started to like more groups until I became complete trash.

Crayon Pop Bar Bar Bar gif 2.gif

6. Do you know how to speak to Korean?

Extremely limited but I do know the odd word. I could never hold a conversation or watch anything without subtitles though, it’s literally probably like ten words at the most.

7. Have you gone to any K-Pop concerts?

My first K-Pop concert was K-Con Paris where I saw Block B, IOI, BTS, f(x), FT Island and SHINee. Then I saw 24K who I’ve now seen three times. I saw Block B at their own concert again. Went to London Korean Festival and saw KNK, Snuper, EXID and Highlight. I also Dreamcatcher in February. BTS just announced their World Tour and I was so excited until I saw that they’d be in London while I was in Japan which is just bloody typical. Luckily they’ll be in Paris when we get back so we can just travel to see them there, assuming we get tickets.

8. Do you have any K-Pop merch?

Tons of K-Pop albums, a few t-shirts (one ASTRO, one BTS and one Crayon Pop), some cheering towels (Girls’ Generation and 24K), a few posters (BTS, 2NE1, Girls’ Generation and 24K) and a J-Hope phone case. I think that’s about it. Unless photo cards count too, I have a few of them.

9. Do you watch variety shows?

I’m never really sure what ‘variety show’ means but I watch Men on a Mission and Weekly Idol.

10. Top 3 biases?

Cory from 24K, J-Hope from BTS and Kisu from 24K.

11. What was the first K-Pop song you immediately liked upon hearing?

Ooh this is difficult because when I first got into K-Pop every song required a few listens before I liked it. I think it was 2NE1’s ‘I Am the Best’ because I’d gotten used to the beat from watching that advert the song appeared in – I can’t remember what the advert was for but I used to hear it every time I went to the cinema.

2NE1 I Am The Best gif 2.gif

12. A K-Pop group you really don’t like or don’t want to give a try?

NCT which isn’t 100% true because I do like some of their songs but because of their concept of having tons of idols in the same group and having everyone in sub-units it really puts me off. I just find it too confusing. But it’s not really 100% true because through Becca I’m starting to hear a ton more songs and they are good, I’m just not a fan of the concept.

13. Who is your LEAST favourite idol?

I don’t really have one because I don’t go out of my way to dislike anybody. I wasn’t a fan of the fat-shaming comments Super Junior’s Shindong made a while ago so I guess him.

14. Do you listen to solo artists as much as groups?

I think so, I do prefer groups but solo songs are just as good.

15. What has been your favourite comeback of the year?

We’re only in April so I’m hoping for some amazing comebacks this year but the first one that really blew me away was CLC’s ‘Black Dress’, I loved that from the first listen. I think that’ll chart quite high on my ‘Favourite K-Pop Songs From 2018’. Oh My Girl’s ‘Banana Allergy Monkey’ was good too but I wasn’t feeling it on first listen so I’ll go with ‘Black Dress’.

CLC Black Dress gif.gif

16. What is your least favourite concept/era from your favourite group?

24K – U R So Cute – I actually quite like the song but it’d still be my least favourite
Girls’ Generation – Genie – That leg dance move they do is just super annoying
BTS – NO – It’s an okay song but it’s not my favourite

17. Has your bias acted in any films or dramas at all?

I’m pretty sure Cory was in a thing but I don’t know if it was a drama. Other than that I don’t really know, I don’t go out of my way to watch idols in K-Dramas. I did wanna watch V in Hwarang but I never got around to it.

18. Are you one those people that stans trainees or groups before they debut?

No, I don’t know any trainees and I generally wait until the groups debuted before I start to get interested. I’ve heard a lot about Loona and I keep thinking of checking them out but I think I’ll wait until their debut. I can’t really be bothered until then.

19. Who was your first ever bias in the K-Pop industry?

I suppose Soyul from Crayon Pop but the first person I ever actively biased was probably J-Hope from BTS.

J-Hope gif 2.gif

20. If you had a Korean name, what would it be?

I hate questions like this.

21. Who would you want as an older brother?

Jin from BTS, think of all the yummy food he’d make.

22. Who would you want as an older sister?

Probably Gummi from Crayon Pop because she seems like a really caring person so I imagine she’d make a great older sister.

23. Funniest couple?

I don’t know, I’ve never really thought about like two people who I think are funnier when they’re together.

24. If your bias kissed you, how would you react?

This has sort of already happened to me because Kisu kissed my hand at the 24K fan meet. Other than that I’d probably be like ‘well’. I don’t know, it’s a weird question.

25. If your bias asked you to marry him/her, how would you react?

I think we all sit back and we’re like “I’d say yes!” But let’s be real for a second. I’d have said yes if Gerard Way had asked me to marry him when I was thirteen but now I’d be stuck with a middle-aged man making music I don’t care about anymore. We don’t genuinely know any idols so it’d be easy for me to be like “yes” but how awkward if we had nothing in common?

26. Worst looking idol?

None of them, for crying out loud.

27. TOP or G-Dragon?

I don’t really listen to either of them but probably G-Dragon.

28. Which company is your favourite?

I think regardless of how much you think you like a company each of them is low-key shady. I’d probably say Chrome, the company that Crayon Pop were from. I liked Big Hit for a while but I don’t know I’ve read some stuff that’s put me off a little bit.

29. In terms of looks, which group is the best?

I think Oh My Girl have some stunning visuals. If you also want a boy group then BTS I guess.

Oh My Girl gif 2.gif

30. In terms of songs, which group is the best?

I’d say Girls’ Generation because they have such a wide range of concepts. For boy groups it’s between 24K and BTS.

31. Which group would you prefer to have as classmates in real life?

After watching Knowing Bros I’d love to have Heechul as a classmate but I wouldn’t particularly want the rest of Super Junior. I guess for a whole group I’d want 24K, they’d be hilarious.

32. Who would you want as a best friend?

I feel like I’m repeating a lot of idols so I’ll try and pick someone different! I think Hyoyeon from Girls’ Generation is pretty funny so she’d be a great best friend. Or Hyolyn from SISTAR, she seems pretty cool.

33. Who would you want as a boyfriend?

I always say Cory from 24K or J-Hope from BTS although realistically I don’t think I have much in common with either of them.

34. Who would you want as a husband?

Refer back to question 33 I guess.

35. How many kids will you have with them?

None, kids are annoying.

36. Which K-Pop star do you wish to have a body like?

Probably Hwasa from Mamamoo, I think she’s proper body goals.

37. Which K-Pop star do you wish to have a face like?

Hmm I guess Yooa from Oh My Girl because she’s literally stunning or Sunny from Girls’ Generation.

Yooa gif 2.gif

38. Lastly which group would you like to work with in real-life?

Either 24K or BTS because I think both of them would be really funny.

This tag was supposed to have 40 questions but I took a couple out, because they were just annoying. Feel free to comment some of your answers!

Fandoms That Low-Key Saved My Life

London Comic Con.jpg

It’s no secret that I’m absolute trash but what I’m trash for changes all the time. I’ve been in a ton of different fandoms and I’ve realised that most of them actually played quite an important part in my life and I definitely wouldn’t be the person I am without them. Sure some of them seem a little cringey now that I look back on them but I wouldn’t change anything so I decided to write a blog post about which fandoms have impacted on my life.

My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance.png

The first fandom I ever joined was the My Chemical Romance fandom. In my first RE class at Secondary School I met a girl who loved MCR and I really wanted to be her friend. When I started listening to them I realised I actually already enjoyed some of their songs (My sister had played me ‘Famous Last Words’ before and whenever I went over I begged her to put on ‘the pie song’ for me. Long story.) Before I knew it I was absolute trash, I’d even argue I was a bigger fan by this point than the girl I’d met in RE who quickly became my best friend at the time.

I became fully absorbed in My Chemical Romance, this is embarrassing now but I was a big fan of writing so eventually I started to write FanFiction – I actually got a bit of a reputation on the site I was on and ended up making a lot of friends. I also made friends through their website and I’d add them all on MSN then every so often we’d have ‘MCR Parties’ on a Friday night which was basically a lot of us in one group chat just having a good time. I actually met one of my best friends Penina through FanFiction and we’re still good friends today.

I ended up seeing MCR twice live and made friends at both concerts, I met Emma at the concert in Manchester and we met Kane at the concert in Birmingham (I’m pretty sure he legit ditched his friends and just hung out with us) and honestly I loved MCR so much. When the ‘Danger Days’ album was released I put together my own Killjoy outfit and one Friday night I even ended up doing an MSN roleplay with some MCR fans where we were all killjoys – see I know it’s a bit sad now but fourteen year old me was living for it.

I even made my Mom take me, Jasmine and Raechel to Birmingham for a ‘Killjoy Meet-up’ where we met other My Chemical Romance fans and walked around singing MCR songs. Someone filmed the day but I don’t think we ever found an edited video but we did take tons of photos – which although are a little embarrassing now are also really funny.

Growing up is difficult enough but I feel like I did an okay job because I had my fandom from when I turned twelve until the group eventually split when I was sixteen. Luckily I wasn’t as big of a fan by then so I wasn’t too devastated… I say as if I didn’t tear down all my posters and chuck them in the bin upon hearing they’d split. I’m known for being a little dramatic.

I still like My Chemical Romance a little bit and I’m still holding onto the hopes that they will return next year (I read a theory that they will and I’m clinging onto it) and honestly, I’m glad I grew up as a My Chemical Romance fan because I made so many friendships and memories that really help me throughout my teenage years.

Supernatural

I think part of the reason that my parting with My Chemical Romance was a bit easier was probably because I’d become a massive Supernatural fan a few months before they split so my main fandom at the time of their break-up was Supernatural. I mentioned meeting my friend Penina on an MCR FanFic site – well, we ended up adding each other on Facebook and for a while we would literally talk to each other from the moment we woke up to the moment we went to sleep. She was already a big Supernatural fan and kept recommending the show and I’d began to see a lot of Supernatural fans emerging on Tumblr. After one disastrous Christmas I headed up town and decided to have a DVD day. I bought season one of Supernatural and headed back home.

It’s crazy now because I just don’t have the attention span but I put the DVD on at about 12PM and at 1AM I was still watching it. I was immediately absorbed and it was fun finally being able to talk to Penina about it. For the rest of the Christmas holidays I would head back up town, buy the next box set then head back home and watch it until stupid o’clock in the morning until I eventually ran out of money. I got the seventh box set as an Easter and I’d finally caught up with the series! So I had to watch new episodes on crappy websites that were probably downloading a ton of viruses but it was worth it to watch Supernatural. I used to get up at stupid o’clock in the morning before school to watch them to ensure that when I got home I wouldn’t come across any spoilers. I took that show seriously.

This escalated when I realised there was a yearly Supernatural convention held in the UK called ‘Asylum’. This convention was held in May and even better it wasn’t in London or somewhere far away from me, it was held in Birmingham of all places! Birmingham is just under an hour away by train for me and is super easy to get to so I was ecstatic. Unfortunately that first year I didn’t get a ticket because it sold out but Penina got one so I showed up and followed her round all day and got to meet some of the cast. Then the next year and for the next three, maybe four years I went to every Asylum convention and gradually met quite a lot of the cast.

Supernatural was another fandom where I ended up making a ton of new friends and having some really awesome experiences and I held onto this fandom throughout my time at college and honestly I don’t know what I would’ve done without Supernatural. I got into this show after one of the worst Christmas’ ever and I was still in the middle of my lonely Secondary School phase (I had a few months where I spent every weekend alone and generally hated myself). The cast were also always super nice whenever I met them and I just loved Supernatural so much.

K-Pop

Girls Generation 2.jpg

My experience as a K-Pop fan is kind of different because I haven’t really made any internet friends through the K-Pop fandom but I have done more than I ever thought I would. Because I’m a K-Pop fan I ended up visiting Paris and Amsterdam to attend concerts and I’m also going to South Korea later this year, somewhere I never really had an interest in going before. It was also thanks to K-Pop that I got friendly with a couple of girls in my dorm at university because they saw my Girls’ Generation Facebook header.

It was also thanks to K-Pop that I stopped having a ‘bad year’. I’m sorry to talk about it again so I’ll make it quick – I got called on stage at a 24K concert, they sang to me, I realised life wasn’t all that bad, you can read all about it here because I wrote a proper long post about it and how I felt and everything but honestly I just still can’t believe it.

So although K-Pop has been there for me in a different way to the first two fandoms it’s still had a big impact on my life and honestly I’m glad I became a K-Pop fan because I think it made me and my friends a bit more adventurous and I just love the music so much.

Dan and Phil

Dan and Phil

I can’t remember if I talked about this before or not but when I went to university I didn’t have a great time, I felt a bit rubbish all the time and I just didn’t like it. So I was thrilled to come home one weekend so I could go and see Dan & Phil live with their stage show ‘The Amazing Tour is Not on Fire’. It was on in Birmingham so I came back to Telford and the next day went to Birmingham to meet them. And honestly, they were amazing. The show was so good and Dan and Phil themselves were so lovely.

Me, Dan + Phil

Then I had to head back to London because obviously I had to go back to uni at some point. But luckily Dan and Phil announced a couple more shows so I bought another VIP ticket to see them one last time in London. When I went to the show I hadn’t really spoken to anyone in a few days, I hadn’t had any human contact and hugging them was the first proper interaction I’d had in maybe two weeks. So once they’d signed my stuff and we’d taken a selfie I quickly asked if I could get one more hug to which they both obliged. I suppose to them I was just one weird fan amongst many who wanted another hug but to me, who was feeling so, so lonely at the time, that one last hug was everything.

Even when I wasn’t meeting them they were there for me at university. I’d make myself breakfast and watch their videos. If my room mates were being loud in the middle of the night I’d put my headphones on and watch one of their videos. I’d go over to Jess’ and we’d watched their videos together. Their book was also released shortly after I went to uni and I remember being so sad when I got to the end of it because that book also helped me in my dark moments.

I didn’t realise it at the time but Dan and Phil were there when I felt like I had no one and honestly I feel like I owe them so much because they helped me through that difficult time. Ultimately I made the decision to leave university but I’d have left a lot sooner without Dan and Phil.

Achievement Hunter

Achievement Hunter.gif

For a while I was a massive Achievement Hunter fan then slowly I stopped watching less and less of their content until suddenly I became a massive fan again towards the start of last year. Just as well because unfortunately my Grandad passed away in early February. The day after everyone stayed at home and we kept the curtains closed. It was suffocating being around everyone in the darkness so I mostly stayed in my room and watched Achievement Hunter videos. Even now, no matter how bad my day is I can always rely on Achievement Hunter to cheer me up.

Last year I wanted to go to RTX London so badly but unfortunately I was in New York (tragic I know) and this year I figured that if they did come back it’d be around the same date so I’d be in Japan. Luckily they’re actually holding it mid-September and even luckier, general sale tickets go on sale on Pay Day. I really hope I meet at least one person from Achievement Hunter because they’ve honestly helped me smile in some of the hardest times. I’m praying there’s a decent line-up because I’ve wanted to meet Achievement Hunter for so long and I’d be so excited. I really hope I get a ticket.

So as you can see I’ve had fandom around me for the times when I’ve needed it the most and I honestly wouldn’t change anything. I’m trash but I’m honestly fine with that due to the memories I’ve made and I’m sure I’ll continue to make.

I’m gonna tell one last story before I end this post. I used to be a big fan of Sherlock so whilst I was at university I discovered Benedict Cumberbatch was a doing a show at some theatre, I can’t remember what it’s called now but obviously tickets were sold out and the only ones left were stupidly expensive. However the venue sold I think it was forty tickets a day if you were at theatre for 10AM. So on the first day I got up at 6AM to get to the theatre and they sold out so the next day I got up at 5AM to get tickets but unfortunately they sold out again so I gave up. What a sad story. So I never got to see Benedict Cumberbatch alive and in the flesh.
